Eating meatballs one day out of date?

Sorry just posting for traffic.

I have a pack of meatballs in my fridge (unopened) that I want to cook for tea but they are one day past their use by date. Will it be OK to cook them? I'd be feeding them to a toddler as well so wanted to be extra careful! Thanks

I’d say fine. Dates are calculated with a massive safety margin, it’s an absolute overestimate of when the food will be off by.
The meatballs can’t tell the time! I’d give them a sniff first.

If the meat looks OK and doesn't smell funny I'd be inclined to use them. Perhaps cook them for a bit longer?

Assuming it had been stored properly in a cold fridge I would (and have) serve it to my family, and just be extra careful about ensuring it was fully cooked through.

Though that said minced meat is one of the worse things for food poisoning risk so if you are extra cautious bear that in mind.

Yes, it'll be fine if you cook them properly.

Absolutely fine

Thanks everyone. I'd be cooking them in the slow cooker all day so they will definitely be thoroughly cooked.

Totally fine.

No, the teeny tiny timer in each meatball will have gone off at midnight rendering them dangerous to life 😂

Or, using common sense, you can see them and smell them, go with that but unless something unusual has happened to them of course they'll be fine.

Changingplace · 29/10/2022 09:59

Yes absolutely fine and even if they weren’t you’d know the minute you opened the packet.

oopsfellover · 29/10/2022 10:01

I’d eat them a week out of date personally, if they seemed ok!
