That I don't want to cut his hair...

On occasion I have cut my husband's hair. I do a good job but it takes me over an hour, and I find it really stressful. He says I'm better than a hairdresser but I have told him to pay a professional. I am NOT a hairdresser.

We are now on holiday. He wants his hair cut and has called me mean for not cutting his hair. I said do it before we go away, and he didn't. I think that's not my problem. I asked him to be an adult. He now has tried to do it himself with beard clippers. It looks ridiculous! It has made me laugh at least but why oh why can he not listen. I did it when we were travelling in our 30's and I did it in lockdown a couple of times. Aibu to keep saying no? I want to relax on holiday!!!

I’d probably do it for him at home, in the same way he does things for me sometimes too - but no way would I be doing it on holiday! I wouldn’t have the right scissors etc for a start, plus I go on holiday to get away from tedious chores!

A lot of men have a weird issue with hairdressers. Being touched in a public place I think. Many to the point of panic attacks. Women are socialised to touch each other much more.

I wonder if he's actually a bit anxious about it himself.

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/10/2022 15:39

Tonsurephobia is the fear of getting a haircut.

Every day is a school day!

Frida9 · 28/10/2022 15:39

I used to cut my dad's hair when I lived at home, he moaned for a bit when I left home that he would now have to pay for haircuts but I didn't have time to do his hair all the time.
How often does your husband need his hair cut? If it's a number 1 all over and he needs it every few weeks maybe help him to do it himself instead of being reliant on you

queenofthebongo · 28/10/2022 15:42

Well that was I thought. I often tidy it up for him once it's been cut and I can make it nice. But we don't have scissors. He has now hacked at it with a beard trimmer, has cut the fringe way too short, and gas managed to leave the back long! It's a terrible terrible 80's mullet but we are both now laughing! He's gone to find scissors! 🙈

I quite enjoy doing my DH’s hair, I find it relaxing. I watched a few YouTube videos to try to learn how to do it.

An hour seems quite a long time though.. are you cutting one hair at a time? 😁

YANBU to not do it if you don’t enjoy it though.

It's with scissors not a quick run over with clippers. I offered to buy clippers but he didn't want them! He is most definitely NOT afraid! He just likes me to do it and he's quite lazy and very tight! 😂

😂 cheeky! I suppose I do it in about 3 stages. I worry it's not good enough so keep going till it all matches. I am rubbish at doing it though! 🙈

I cut my dhs hair during lockdown... that's the closest we've come to divorce! I did a good job but the stress was unreal. I extra appreciate my hairdresser now!!

ABJ100 · 28/10/2022 15:51

Yanbu, I had to do it in lockdown on both DH and ds and hated it. And wouldn't you believe I sneezed at the same time as I was using the machine and you can imagine what happened. Didn't help that I couldn't stop laughing, but fortunately for dh we weren't seeing anyone.

SalviaOfficinalis · 28/10/2022 15:53

Ah, fair enough, it does take longer with scissors. I do the back and sides with clippers and just use scissors for the top.

Hope you manage to sort out the hair disaster between the two of you!

dudsville · 28/10/2022 15:58

I do mine. With the pandemic my partner wanted me to do his. I'm not good at doing his, but i can also be tight with money so i respect he wants to save a few pounds. I do my best, i don't have skill in the area and make mistakes. I spend no more than 10 min doing it.

lurchermummy · 28/10/2022 16:19

Oh god I hear you - my DH cuts his own with clippers because he's too tight to go to the barbers and he always wants me to do the neck bits he can't reach, it gives me the absolute rage.

ShineOnYouLikeMorningStar · 28/10/2022 16:24

Tell him, you're happy to give him a clipper cut. No scissors. His choice. (Clippers are relatively easy but scissors are a PITA TBH.) He doesn't get to demand & then dictate how you do it.

ScottChegg · 28/10/2022 16:56

I cut my boys hair for years, with scissors. Thankfully DH does his own with the clippers. My boys are now adults and one of them refuses to let me cut his hair anymore (Yes! Get in!) but the other has psoriasis on his scalp and refuses to let anyone else touch it. It is a bit of a mission and not having a place for him to sit at the right height to not make my arms ache is a bit of a pain. I wouldn't want to do it on holiday either.

queenofthebongo · 28/10/2022 18:47

Ah thanks you lot. Well the funniest news is that the beard trimmers ran out of charge and he doesn't have the charger! He has a short fringe, long back and sides and looks a sight! He went to find scissors or a hairdresser and found neither....I think I just don't want him to assume I will always do it! I will sort it when we find scissors!
