To say no to my child wearing a killer costume?

ReadyBoots · 28/10/2022 10:04

Son is 8 and when asked what he wants to be on Halloween, replies, “a killer.” 🙄.
He was looking at Friday 13th costume with hockey mask.
AIBU (or rather, AIBACS am I being a compete spoilsport) to not get him this outfit?
His argument was last year he dressed as the Grim Reaper, i.e. the biggest ‘killer’ of all. He’s not wrong, but am I alone in feeling that’s different?
I’m going to stick to my guns, but am curious what other people think, and what are their kids dressing as this Halloween?
Have fun on the day, all!

Stick to your guns. Tell him it's a wizard, a pumpkin or nothing.

RedHelenB · 28/10/2022 10:12

It's dress up.

SellingFairytales · 28/10/2022 10:12

A killer! Brilliant.

Just tell him to be the Grim Reaper again if he's the biggest killer of all time.

ThirdTimeIsTheCharm · 28/10/2022 10:12

YABU it is Halloween, not Carnival

olympicsrock · 28/10/2022 10:13

That sounds a bit OTT for an 8 year old. However my 7 year old likes to wear a sheet and cry ‘murder!, Kill ‘ etc I guess the difference is that we can tell him to tone it down a bit in front of strangers…. And be a bit more Casper the friendly ghost

Spookymcspookerson2022 · 28/10/2022 10:19

My 9yo wouldnt wear any halloween costume. We tried so many shops and looked at so many options.

So hes gone to school today as a particular sports person with a cape and face paint.

BattenburgDonkey · 28/10/2022 10:22

Were do you draw the line though? Are you banning vampire costumes too? I don’t see why it’s different really, it’s just a character for fancy dress.

Tinktravels · 28/10/2022 10:24

id say yabu. People dress as the devil which imo is way worse.

Unanananana · 28/10/2022 10:26

Death never killed anyone, he just helps them move on.

At least he doesn't want to go as Jeffrey Dahmer.

LadyTwinkle · 28/10/2022 10:27

The grim reaper isn't a killer, he just collects the souls of the recently deceased.

But the devil isn't real, serial killers are

Vampires don’t exist, killers do.

i votes YANBU. I saw a kid, cca 6-7, dressed as one of the Squid game guards and carrying a gun. WTF.

LuckyLil · 28/10/2022 10:28

What do you think he should go as? Could it be your own costume ideas are a bit tame? What exactly would you prefer him to wear. Is that something he is going to like? My guess is probably not.

Tinktravels · 28/10/2022 10:29

@hellosunshineagainxxx You may not believe but I do and i think that is way worse to dress as.

MistyFrequencies · 28/10/2022 10:31

I think YABU. Halloweens supposed to be scary. Killers are scary. Let him at it.

Tinktravels · 28/10/2022 10:33

@hellosunshineagainxxx Also he is dressing as a made up character not a real killer

LadyTwinkle · 28/10/2022 10:33

I think a costume from a horror franchise such as Friday 13th or Scream is a bit different to dressing up as Jeffrey Dahmer or Fred West. Because Dahmer was a real person who killed real people, and many of his victims families are still alive, whereas Friday 13th is fiction Jason didn't actually kill anyone in the real world. I think some people don't realise Dahmer is a real person. They think it's a made up Netflix show.

Objectionhearsayspeculation · 28/10/2022 10:34

One of the original ideas of Samhain/Halloween is to dress as something scary to ward off evil spirits and honour the dead. It also represents the death of the crops and the end of the season so he's spot on.

The character he is dressing up as doesn’t exist. A vampire doesn’t exist. Both are killers.

Agree with this, it’s not half as bad as people dressing as actual serial killers. But I would say no to a child dressing as this because presumably he hasn’t even seen the film and wouldn’t know the character. Plenty of time to dress as characters from adult movies when he’s an adult - he might as well dress as an age appropriate character while he’s a child. Sort of like how I don’t think it’s out there for a someone to dress like Hannibal Lecter or Jennifer from Jennifer’s Body for Hallowe’en - but my 8yo can go as Wednesday Addams or Casper instead!

Mumoblue · 28/10/2022 10:40

YABU. I was a rather morbid little child myself and Halloween is a great time to embrace that sort of thing.

ilovearainyday · 28/10/2022 10:47

YANBU. I'd say no too. I'd also not want my kid playing with toy guns and knives.

Yes, it is just a bit of play acting but to me, it can also lead to normalising violence. I'm not a fan of Halloween and really dislike all the gory displays in the shops - dolls hanging from nooses, blood dripping from eyeballs. Yuck. It's a no from me.

Lullabies2Paralyze · 28/10/2022 10:49

Should an 8 year old even have seen these films to know who Jason is or die he just think it looks cool? At 8 I was still wearing black bin bag witch cloaks or bed sheet ghost outfits 😂

Grumpybutfunny · 28/10/2022 11:09

I'm sure Friday the 13th must be appearing in some YouTube videos as my son asked for the same. He's going to a halloween disco tonight as a glow in the dark skeleton and then trick or treating as the thing from scream.
