Mr Men books and their sadistic lessons

I tried to post this in a different fashion but MN thought it was serious and deleted it - as an AIBU from the point of view of the villagers in “Mr Nosey”, who stage increasingly violent interventions on Mr Nosey until one villager is standing behind a fence, presumably to saw off his nose if he is nosey?! (It doesn’t come to that, thank god, because Mr Nosey had learnt his lesson, having had his nose hammered previously)

anyway the Mr Men books. My children are obsessed. Anyone care to discuss the most maniacal one they’ve encountered?

Years since I've read them, but I think Mr Tickle was decidedly dubious!

My son is obsessed with Mr Greedy and the Gingerbread Man. It ends with the GM being caught and narrating his being eaten alive by the corpulent pink Mr.

There was one about the character building a house that overlooks another house and the characters having a 'nightmare neighbour' style arguement.
I can't remember which one it was though.
Everyone knows Mr Tickle ended up with several criminal records.....

Mr Messy was the subject of an intervention by Mr Tidy and Mr Neat then underwent forcible hair straightening. Like a cult. Poor old Mr Messy! A salutary lesson indeed.

I had a phonics group of Y4 children who were new to English a few years ago. We always used the last 5 minutes of our lesson for me to read a book to them and they loved Mr Men. My brothers and I still have a complete collection (of all the original ones, and the Little Miss ones - none of the new extra ones).

I could never read them without attempting to sound like Arthur Lowe.

My kids loved Mr Jelly and Mr Messy. Mr Messy had the nickname Mr Messy Minger in our house.

I love Mr Men, I use them to teach genetic variation: show a picture of a Mr Men and a picture of a Little Miss and the students draw their potential offspring. Its always hard to move on from as they always ask for "Just one more!" which surprised me the first time.

I adored the MR men books as a child and I don’t think I turned out to be psychologically damaged from reading about MR men book violence 🤣

My favourite was Mr tickle lol interesting fact, Mr tickle was the first Mr man, the daughter of the author asked them what a tickle looked like, so the author decided to draw a picture of a tickle … How cute is that? 😁

Mr Tickle is a wrong’un, no doubt. The entire story is just him tickling people against their will and then going home and laughing about it. He should be locked up.

mr Messy is also pretty outrageous - his house gets Kim and Aggie’d against his will and then he gets an unsolicited makeover

Mr Greedy gets forcefed an amount of food that would not be feasible.

i actually think Mr Happy might be the worst of all. He’s popping up in everyone’s business - he taught Mr Rude a lesson by basically inviting himself to stay at his house. He’s like the cliche MN nightmare CF guest

I love the Mr Men books! The punctuation is awful though. The one we read the most was Mr Small I think which was a bit boring and sounded like it had been written in 5 minutes but my kids loved it.

I think Mr Bounce got used as a tennis ball. Can’t have been pleasant.

I love Mr Quiet, though the first time I read it we were all very sad that he was going home hungry each day because he was too quiet in the shops. He ran home and hid in bed - I had a lump in my throat when I was reading it to the kids!

I still have my childhood copies of Mr small, which is pretty trippy.

My childrens favourite one is Mr Noisy who clomps about Wobbletown slamming doors and screaming in everyone's faces until the butcher and the baker pretend that they can't hear him one day and he goes home from the shops empty handed and hungry! They keep pretending not to hear him until he suddenly has the bright idea of speaking in a normal tone of voice and not slamming doors and clomping about!

I like the one wear Mr Bump gets a suit of armour and decides to become a Knight, he's a rubbish Knight but after a few days walking around in armour he's unrecognisable without all his bandages and bumps!

I don’t understand the bit in mr bounce where it says he bounces out of bed each morning and down the stairs and that’s why he doesn’t shut his bedroom door or something that makes 0 sense

I haven't read these in decades! Though a quick Google unearthed this part in Mr Tickle:

How bloody sinister! Some kid lying in bed and suddenly reads that some weird, long armed orange bloke is going to come in and start some unsolicited tickling. The moment I read that I thought of the 1980s kid's celebrity TV stars. Shudder
