Scene setting:

Our new house, which we have beentrying to buy for months and months and finally got just before christmas.
ILs first visit to aforementioned house.
Through front door...MIL, true to form, ignores fact that DH is showing them the living room and hops off into the dining room/kitchen - causing a lovely little jig to take place in our not-huge hallway as I try to follow her to do the " and this is the cupboard we mentioned" routine while DH and FIL discuss living room (while standing in the hallway etc etc)

Question:
Once in our dining room/kitchen...what are the first words out of MILS mouth...?

It's not very big is it?

purplemonkeydishwasher · 28/01/2008 10:22

something about the dishes not being done? (maybe that's just my house!)

southeastastra · 28/01/2008 10:24

isn't it dark?
old fashioned?

tigana · 28/01/2008 10:24

Nope. A little more in-your-face-impolite-and-unexpected...

"Is it your bin making this room smell of cheese?"

See I was raised to expect a modicum of tact and diplomacy ... at least for the first 30 seconds of a vist...

she sounds like a charmer! very strange thing to say though

singyswife · 28/01/2008 10:28

OMG she sounds lovely. Hope you gave her a nice polite answer to that one.

tigana · 28/01/2008 10:30

I smiled and gently explained the scent of cheese was due to ...the cheese on the sideboard which we had bought for them to have for lunch because they like smelly cheeses...next time they can sodding have cheddar!

No, not patient, I just have a chronic fear of confrontation!
In my mind I was snarling "how fucking rude!"

HeppyChick · 28/01/2008 11:09

On walking into my bathroom 'My goodness, it is sparkling in here' - eyes me suspiciously - 'have you been cleaning?'

tigana · 28/01/2008 11:19

Oooh and then later one she wanted to know if we were going to send ds to a grammar school, because she was worried if we were going to send him to an "inner city" comprehensive...

um

where to start?

How about
1 - the local comp isn't inner city it is suburban
2 - who says the local inner city comp is crap anyway?
3- none of her business
and, crucially IMHO
4 - ds is two and half at the moment.....

It's like she wants a fight...
