Private tonsillectomy - is it worth it?

Hi,

I am trying to decide if a private tonsillectomy is worth it. I’ve been quoted £2,410. I have to pay up front. I’m by no means wealthy but I’ve got savings from having lived with my parents for two years.

Anyone gone through it and able to share whether they think it will be worth the cost and indeed the pain?(!)

Thank you!

I had mine out aged 27, not privately but on NHS. However it improved my life so much that I would have spent my savings on it.

Just to offer an alternate view. I had mine out at 17 and it was awful. Ever since I've caught sore throats even more easily my throat just becomes inflamed rather than my tonsils....which takes even longer to clear up,
It's not recommended by some Doctors now due to the fact it removes a layer of defence in the throat against germs.
I honestly regret having it done and would not recommend it.

Sorry, I realise it probably sounds a bit sensationalist 😬. Most tonsillectomies are absolutely fine. But some do bleed.

Bleeds can be anything from just a little ooze to a full on pour, but because of where the wound site is - its a medical emergency. Even a minor ooze needs close observation, I've legged it down a few corridors taking a patient back to theatre.

Thanks for the explanation.
And the use of "Ooze" its not used enough 🤣

I would say yes absolutely. We had DS’ out - justified on the basis that we were missing too much work - and he’s never had a problem since. We paid much more than that in London too!

Docs probably were too quick to operate in the past but the current NHS (lack of) provision is ridiculous. Poor kids who fall just below the threshold just get ignored for years.

In my opinion it definitely worth it. My young adult DS was so ill with recurrent tonsillitis. He was put on the list for a tonsillectomy but was told the wait could be up to 12 months. He couldn't wait that long as was getting more and more I'll and run down,

Have a look at laser tonsillectomy. The cost is similar, but the recovery time is a lot less than a traditional tonsillectomy, the after effects of which can be pretty awful for adults.
