To ask how to get my neighbour to be a bit quieter?

Neighbour is lovely. Single mum, 1DC, they have lived there about 7 years.
DC is now an adult and has recently left home. Neighbour is now home alone.

Neighbour seems to be enjoying her alone time. Mainly late evening. Around my bedtime. Walls are rather thin. She is rather loud.
Any way I can say, Hey neighbour, we can all hear you, without actually saying it?

(Name changed, obvs).

🤣

What sort of noise is it? If it's music, definitely just tell her, but I kind of get the impression that you're talking about a noisy sex life, and if that's the case, I think I'd just say next time you see her something along the lines of, 'Hi Sue, good to hear you're enjoying yourself now that you live alone'. She'll probably either ask you what you mean, in which case tell her that you can hear, or go bright red or get flustered, when she realises what you're talking about. Most of us wouldn't like to think the neighbours know what we're getting up to!

Fake enjoy yourself back?

RandomMess · 23/10/2022 20:50

Pop a note through her door - it sure you realise how thin the walls are especially next to the main bedroom.

FuckingHell123 · 23/10/2022 20:51

I presume OP means neighbour is having some quality alone time

Chicheguevara · 23/10/2022 20:51

Play a radio or something, on your side of the diving wall. She might figure out that if she can hear the radio that you can hear her.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 23/10/2022 20:51

Whatever you do, don't do what my roommate at uni did and yell "WE CAN HEAR YOU DAVE AND AVA" at the top of your voice from the backyard. Embarrassing. Names changed.

My old neighbour had a breakup and then started to really really enjoy dating, I just used headphones/ear plugs and let her get on with it. I'd have only gone round if I had my neice staying with me and it got inappropriate.

MarmiteCoriander · 23/10/2022 20:56

I'm assuming you live in a semi? Couldn't you just bang on the wall- can you keep it down Margorie? Or a note through the door? She is clearly oblivious to how thin the walls are if she is the one making all the noise!

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 23/10/2022 20:57

Dh (single and decades ago) lived in a badly converted house / in to flats. He used to bang on the ceiling, with a broom handle, when the upstairs lovebirds got to the critical moment. I think they got the message.

You are correct.
Music I could cope with and wouldn't mind saying, mate, I can hear your tunes through the wall.

My DH is both amused and embarrassed. We took a parcel in for her and he couldn't look her in the face when she came to pick it up. 😂

@MarmiteCoriander Terrace, not a semi. As the other neighbour also shares a bedroom wall, I did think about saying that I could hear noises from that side, but a)that room is occupied by a little girl, who is quiet as a mouse, and b) noisy neighbour is very good friends with other neighbour and would probably tell them I'd complained about the (non-existent) noise.

Next time you see her, say 'Hey Joan, have you got a cat, as I could hear some wailing last night?'

Icanflyhigh · 23/10/2022 22:41

Tap on the wall in rhythm with her.... you won't need to do it more than once!!

StoneofDestiny · 23/10/2022 23:24

Just say 'are you all right neighbour? I'm hearing noises every night from your room and I thought there was a fight". That might be enough to prompt her to relocate her bed.

Play"Oui je t'aime" loudly
