Do you ask for a bag when someone says 'is that all?' IMO this is a separate question

In a cafe this morning, I ordered a sandwich and a coffee and the girl behind the counter said 'is that all?'

I said 'yes, thank you,' and she said the cost. When I then said 'could I have a bag please' she looked remarkably pissed off.

DP agrees that she looked cross but says IABU and should have asked for a bag earlier, as part of the 'is that all' question.

I disagree and say that 'is that all' refers to the food, not the container Halloween Grin

Well you have to pay for a bag so when you say ‘yes that’s all’ they usually click through to the checkout and pay page on the till, then when you ask for a bag as well they have to go back into the transaction and add a bag.
YABU and you’re creating more work for the cashier so I’m not surprised they roll their eyes.

Redcrayons · 23/10/2022 15:16

agree with your DH. YABU

CrushedPistachios · 23/10/2022 15:18

I think there’s usually a charge for a bag, so you are actually adding to your order as it were.

YABU, if you want a bag then you need to ask for it before they total up the transaction.

It is annoying and timewasting for the staff when you say that's all then ask for something else.

PriamFarrl · 23/10/2022 15:20

Do you go through liked over thinking every single encounter with another person?

pewtypie · 23/10/2022 15:20

Why do you even need a bag for a sandwich? Just eat it.

I would have been irrationally annoyed by you as well.

fromparistorome · 23/10/2022 15:22

I'm a terrible overthinker, yes.

I must try and ask earlier, clearly I am wrong with my timing!

Agree, she probably was probably equally annoyed about someone wanting a bag just for sandwich.

When I worked in a shop so many people used to ask for a bag for 1 newspaper or a 500ml bottle of water!! I would even ask if they really needed it and they would just say yeah. I’m sure they aren’t asking now at 25p a bag.

fromparistorome · 23/10/2022 15:24

I did need a bag, it was a big baguette- type one and we were going to half it at home.

Staff should ask "do you want a bag" if it annoys them that much to go back into the transaction. However I ask for a bag with my purchase if I need one

pewtypie · 23/10/2022 15:33

Was it a paperbag/ free or did she have to charge you for it?

This, some people must be exhausted and ready to go back to bed by 9am with the stress of overthinking 😀

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 23/10/2022 15:42

A bag is unnecessary as I wouldn't put a cup of coffee in a bag, and if it's a long baguette I'd just put it under my arm in a 'French-sort-of-way' and toddle off (on the nearest bicycle).
