Hi, does anyone know if this is a poisonous one ? She's pretty big and scarped off before I could catch her ....

Thanks

Looks like a huntsman.

MeghansBitch · 21/10/2022 15:42

Looks like a brown recluse spider 🕷

Eranzer · 21/10/2022 15:42

Zoropsis spinimana. Harmless to humans, like every single spider in the UK unless you're allergic.

Seconding this. I bet you live in the London area. 😄

Three different answers above! Are you any the wiser? 😁

Soubriquet · 21/10/2022 15:44

No spider is poisonous. It’s venomous

If you bite it and you die it’s poison
If it bites you and you die it’s venom.

Sorry but that is my one bug bear.

And no. It’s perfectly fine. Won’t harm you at all

Applesandcarrots · 21/10/2022 15:45

It's a bog standard house spider. Are you new to UK? Because if yes, you have a lot to prepare yourself for with winter coming!

voletsclos · 21/10/2022 15:45

@CoachBeard No I'm in Paris !
@Soubriquet Merci - I'll try and remember this.

@Somethingsnappy I think @Eranzer and @CoachBeard have it - she looks like the pictures of Zoropsis spinimana, happy she's not a huntsman.

Do I just have to accept that she's my room mate now ? Are there any friendly deterrents I can use, she may be harmless but I don't feel like cohabiting with her .

Ah, Paris, that makes sense. They are a fairly recent immigrant to the UK and are only found around London at the moment.
It’ll be far happier outside. Glass and a piece of card works really well.

voletsclos · 21/10/2022 16:59

I'll have to find her again first... unless she finds me first!

I have had success with "zero in" spray. It is non toxic but they don't like the smell. It worked when I had an invasion of cellar spiders (the skinny ones) in my bathroom back in April time - sprayed it all round the window and extractor fan and have had none for ages - a small one appeared recently so I probably need to give it another spraying! I sprayed it liberally around my bed in August as a precaution against spider season! Touch wood, I have not seen any fat house spiders in my flat - just one giant beast in the communal hallway!

(Just be warned if you're not keen on them, it has a really nasty picture of one on the bottle - I have had to cover it with masking tape and I don't normally mind pictures of them!) I bought mine in the local hardware shop but Amazon sell it as well.
