Bird unable to fly....fledgling this time of year?

A bird has been in our back garden all day unable to fly. It didn't look like a baby so tonight I took it to the vets. They think it might be a fledgling but she didn't sound sure, will monitor overnight and I'll go back tomorrow for it. Now I feel guilty. I didn't think you could you could get fledglings at this time of year? Anyone know a lot about birds?!

What sort of bird. Wood pigeons and collared doves may have late broods in October, but most young garden birds should be past the fledging stage by now. Maybe it couldn't fly due to injury?.

Is the vet going to return it to you?

I would look up where your local wild life sanctury is and take it to them. We have a wonderful one near us. We've taken lots to it over the years.

The one time we took a wild bird to our vets (a big sprightly magpie with a broken wing) it ''died suddenly'' about 10 seconds after they took it into an examination room ....

Just googling and yes Doves apparently can be late nesters.

Also species which feed mostly on seeds can sometimes do ok with a late brood as they still have plenty to eat if it's a warm Autumn.

You learn something everyday!
