To ask how well you wash your fruit?

So lately I've been eating more soft fruit like raspberries, blueberries, cherries etc. The type you get in plastic trays from supermarkets, not marketed as organic.

Does anyone know if this kind of product is likely to have been sprayed with pesticides, and if so, how much rinsing does it actually need? I feel like I could be trying to do something healthy whilst simultaneously poisoning myself with nasty chemicals!

I just rinse it under the tap. Never done any of us any harm.

Rinse under the tap for almost lol fruit/ veg.
For wild collected soft fruits I soak in salt water first to get any bugs out.

I don't wash it at all.

NannyR · 12/10/2022 19:38

Occasionally I might rinse it under the tap if it looks a bit dusty, but most of the time I don't wash it. I figure that any pesticides are designed to withstand rain so would need a really good hot soapy scrub to remove (likewise bacteria and viruses) which would wreck the fruit. I've not suffered any ill effects in over thirty years.

DrFoxtrot · 12/10/2022 19:38

I don't wash it unless it looks dirty, which has never happened as far as I can recall.

dementedpixie · 12/10/2022 19:40

Never washed fruit, hardly eat fruit.

GoldenSpiral · 12/10/2022 19:49

I rinse the whole punnet under a tap as soon as I open it. I'll generally let the punnet fill with water and then gently shake the water out as it pours through the holes for a slightly more thorough wash.

ptsdmum · 12/10/2022 19:49

This, but I also only buy organic. Especially for the “dirty dozen”.

I'm a habitual rinser (although no issue eating unwashed if eg picked up for a picnic), but this makes so much sense.
