What weird smells do you like?

Lighthearted!

what weird or unusual smells do you really like?!

I love petrol (not unusual I know but still!) and absolutely adore the smell of teabags. Not fruit or herbal tea, just typical breakfast teabags. I absolutely love them and when I was a child I used to sit with them at my nose and smell them so much (then when I blew my nose it was black and I thought it was hilarious) but even as an adult I adore the smell. I don’t really like the smell of tea, it’s just the teabags!

so, what unusual smells do you like?!

New carpet, freshly painted walls, cars when they are brand new, I’m detecting a theme here 🤔

Hawkins001 · 11/10/2022 00:24

Not saying I like or dislike but growing up, spending time helping to either fix, car engines or paint the protective type paint under landrovers and got used to engine oil, especially if the engine had a small leak ect.

Then there is the one where it's like the chemical in spray paint or old fashioned market pens,

sometimes fresh cut grass or lavender plants

They are the main ones off hand

ErrolTheDragon · 11/10/2022 00:26

WD40 is rather nice.

sometimes fresh cut grass or lavender plants

They're not weird at all.

Banana2079 · 11/10/2022 00:29

Tar, petrol, smell after it rains ( wet concrete wet plants) , damp foliage, moss, rollercoaster electrics , kittens ! Cut grass, coffee, onions frying , the inside of a catalogue

MistyGreenAndBlue · 11/10/2022 00:30

Freshly laid tarmac. I love it. That's pretty weird, right? Grin

Kamia · 11/10/2022 00:30

Smell of books in the library

stillvicarinatutu · 11/10/2022 00:31

Marker pens , diesel, varnish , wood dye and most of all - male rats !
I have fancy rats - the boys smell absolutely Devine . Their fur smells like biscuits. I carry them around frequently and am always sniffing them ! They are beautiful little souls - they lick my face when pleased you see me like little dogs except they're much cleaner ! They have a unique smell which I absolutely love. They smell like furry biscuits!

The smell of cut wood - like in a big B&Q - it's my favourite smell ever.

I also love the smell of wooden tables in some tasting rooms at vineyards - old wood with years of wine soaked into them. Very specific, but intoxicating.

itsnotmeitsu · 11/10/2022 00:33

My dog's biscuity paws (like digestives) 😐

VeridicalVagabond · 11/10/2022 00:34

My husband when he's not shower fresh anymore, after a long day's work or at the gym. I can't imagine he smells like a basket of roses to anyone else, but I love it.

Leaf rot and dying underbrush. Has that wet, musty, autumnal smell.

My dogs pawpads. They smell like cheesy wotsits, but in a weirdly pleasent way.

Muddy boots and slightly damp raincoats that have been sat in a warm cloakroom. Make me think of childhood.

maras3 · 11/10/2022 00:35

Wet concrete.
Husband's wrists.
Tar mac from the 1960's.

That's not weird either.
We lost our dear old dog this year, miss his paws and ears. We say hello to a lot of other peoples dogs, I guess it would be deemed weird to sniff them!

XenoBitch · 11/10/2022 00:38

Diathermy

strawberrydaquiari · 11/10/2022 00:38

Burning wood, new carpets.
My grans perfume but only on her, it smells different on anyone else.
The same when you open new jar of coffee

BeatieBourke · 11/10/2022 00:39

The combination of brick dust and fag smoke you sometimes get on building sites. My brain automatically adds whiskey and aftershave to the mix. Reminds me of my dad on a Friday night, when he'd finished work, had a quick shower and cuddled us up on the sofa for a story.

Also immediately reminds me of the feel of his Friday night silky 80s waistcoat.

stillvicarinatutu · 11/10/2022 00:42

Make rats smell like digestive biscuits too ! I also love my boy doggoes, all musty and lovely

maras3 · 11/10/2022 00:44

xeno Are you a cannibal.
I worked in all theatres in the 1970's and all diathermy smelled like someone's manky BBQ😨

stillvicarinatutu · 11/10/2022 00:47

I know I'm very odd 😂. But I just love the smell of boy ratties. I often just bury my nose in their fur for a good sniff

PixieLaLa · 11/10/2022 00:48

New shoes!

Mad1988 · 11/10/2022 00:52

me too. I love work dust smell on my dh and my dad growing up. Also saw dust.

you know in the film elf where buddy tells the fake santa he doesn't smell like santa, he smells like beef and cheese? My dad used to eat beef, cheese, pickled onions and tomatoes at Christmas and so thats exactly what santa and Christmas smells like to me; beef and cheese!

Also beer on breath. its disgusting but it reminds me of family parties.

i also like the BO smell of My dh.

Also the hot rubber of a hot water bottle and the smell of hot towels in the airing cupboard.

Threeboysandadog · 11/10/2022 01:02

Chlorine from the swimming pool. I find it very calming to lie in bed a night breathing in the chlorine smell on my skin. I shower after swimming but still get the smell until the following day.

SecretWorrier · 11/10/2022 01:03

Pre-weaned baby poo

Eminybob · 11/10/2022 01:08

I'm with you on teabags OP. My Nan worked in a teabag factory when I was little, and I associate that smell with her, even though she was retired for years and years before she died.

I'm obsessed with the smell of sun cream. I use the Nivea sun perfume and reed diffuser so I can be surrounded all year round.

Whenever my DS gets a new book I always give it a good sniff in the hope it smells like my Roald Dahl collection I had as a child, although none has really come close.

I can probably think of more. I think it's incredible how a smell can take you right back into a memory more than any other sense.

missmamiecuddleduck · 11/10/2022 01:21

The smell of salt, sand, and sun on the skin after a day at the beach

The smell of sedimentary rocks, sandstone, basalt, and limestone
