Lighthearted!

what weird or unusual smells do you really like?!

I love petrol (not unusual I know but still!) and absolutely adore the smell of teabags. Not fruit or herbal tea, just typical breakfast teabags. I absolutely love them and when I was a child I used to sit with them at my nose and smell them so much (then when I blew my nose it was black and I thought it was hilarious) but even as an adult I adore the smell. I don’t really like the smell of tea, it’s just the teabags!

so, what unusual smells do you like?!

Oil/ car mechanic type smell. Remind me of my dad.
New print (used to work in marketing and loved when new brochure arrived!)

Reading this has made me realise that I like the smell of dogs! Not the stale, doggy smell that you get in some houses, but the smell that they have when you get in close, which is actually more or less the same, but somehow nicer.

Seashor · 11/10/2022 07:17

Aviation fuel! Can’t get enough of it and freshly lit cigarette smoke!! Totally bizarre.

Soubriquet · 11/10/2022 07:21

Oooo doggy paws. They smell like popcorn

I hate smokers. I’ve never smoked in my life and I don’t intend to either, but when it’s first freshly lit, it does weirdly smell quite pleasant.

Firelighters! I used to be a shopper for sainsburys and if a customer wanted one of those, I’d have a quick sniff of the box before putting it in the totes

Puppy breath
My dogs armpits

IheartNiles · 11/10/2022 07:35

Yes, the Weir. Has a very distinctive smell.
My cats paws.
The smell of a horse as it walks past.
Creosote. Always in the autumn.
The smell the morning after bonfire night, especially when foggy.

anonacfr · 11/10/2022 07:38

Horses
Cow pats
Old musty books
Wood polish on old floorboards
Stagnant sea water ponds- they had one near my grandparents' house and is smells almost sewer like.

MRSE20 · 11/10/2022 07:38

The smell of bonfires or that smell in the air at firework displays

MRSE20 · 11/10/2022 07:39

Also that damp smell after it’s been raining on the pavements

StridTheKiller · 11/10/2022 07:40

Petrol, Kreasote (sp?), Silage, Lush (the shop) 😁.

It's called petrichor - the word doesn't sound as nice as the smell!

LassoOfTruth · 11/10/2022 07:44

Cows. When I walk past the animal market here (rural town, mostly cattle and sheep) the smell of the animals, and cowpats, takes me straight back to my childhood and I love it!

ByTheGrace · 11/10/2022 07:44

@InsertPunHere I was slow there 🤦‍♀️

courgettigreensadwater · 11/10/2022 07:47

@itsnotmeitsu haha. My dogs paws smell like that too and weirdly so did my old cats who passed away a few years ago.

Brillantine · 11/10/2022 07:47

Chalk..... my dad was a teacher and having a hug after he came back from work you could always smell the chalk in his blazer pocket.

It is some kind if bacteria or fungus that makes them smell like that.... my cat too

Jackienory · 11/10/2022 07:48

That smell at Heathrow when a jet has just taken off. I guess it’s the exhaust gasses from the engines. And very young babies. They smell lovely. 🤭

ofwarren · 11/10/2022 07:52

Puppy breath
Cow pat
Horse stables
Rabbit hutch
Old flannels that were wet and have dried out. It's a sort of stale smell.

StiltonCracker · 11/10/2022 07:52

I used to like smelling my newborn's dirty nappies,
Fireworks,
Burnt pumpkin or even better swede lanterns,
Dentists,
Pipe and cigar smoke.

Soubriquet · 11/10/2022 07:55

I used to like smelling my newborn's dirty nappies,

I said this to dh once and he gave me a baffled look. It’s when they are on a milk only diet. It doesn’t smell particularly unpleasant. I wouldn’t sit there sniffing it but it didn’t bother me.

In fact, duck quacks dont echo have proven that a mother will be able correctly identify their babies nappies, purely by smell

ShineOnYouLikeMorningStar · 11/10/2022 07:58

Tea tree oil, it's usually described as unpleasantly medicinal. I even gargle with it in water for sore throats.

EbbyEbs · 11/10/2022 08:05

Dog smell. It’s such a warm and comforting smell to me. I often sit sniffing my dogs head and ears.

SallyWD · 11/10/2022 08:05

Musty, damp smells like caves or underground car parks.

Crabbyboot · 11/10/2022 08:08

New school textbooks and paddling pool plastic 🤤
