What weird smells do you like?

Lighthearted!

what weird or unusual smells do you really like?!

I love petrol (not unusual I know but still!) and absolutely adore the smell of teabags. Not fruit or herbal tea, just typical breakfast teabags. I absolutely love them and when I was a child I used to sit with them at my nose and smell them so much (then when I blew my nose it was black and I thought it was hilarious) but even as an adult I adore the smell. I don’t really like the smell of tea, it’s just the teabags!

so, what unusual smells do you like?!

Musky old churches, second hand book shops, cows, slightly sweaty male pits, tomato plants , my little cats head when he's been in the sun

The musty smell in small, old church halls. Smells a bit like damp wood?

Tomato leaves- not so unusual!
Old books

I absolutely love this smell, again I think it reminds me of childhood and going to Sunday School and church fetes in the musty old church hall Smile

MrsGhastlyCrumb · 11/10/2022 10:33

Tar, petrol, newly lit cigarettes (in fresh air only), paper, dog and my kids' scalps when they're sleeping.

StarlightLady · 11/10/2022 10:36

Bleach!

CulturePigeon · 11/10/2022 10:50

Yes, petrol (or - think someone told me it's actually Benzine, which is in the petrol???) - yummy. Also creosote (carcinogenic, but hey) and timber in general - pine resin, that sort of thing.

The smell of nice quality printed books in the middle (not pulp paperbacks - they don't have a smell). New leather.

Camembert! But I'm a pariah in my family for this. Baking bread.

Mown grass, the earth in Spring, and after summer rain; obviously many, many flowers, plus that old tom-cat smell you get with home-grown tomatoes. The damp, green smell of florists. Chrysanthemums,
which lots of people don't like.

New car smell (never had a new car, but I've smelt it in my richer friends' cars). Woodsmoke and the smell of candles when they're extinguished - childhood birthdays etc. Hardware shops (wood, paint, polish??? Not sure.)

Don't like the smell of a butcher's shop or artificial scents which literally get up my nose. Changing rooms...ugh.

So many.

Sawn wood, gorgeous, rubber, very comforting, and cigars, reminds me of childhood Christmases.

I was born in the 1950's and my older brother told me that I used to have a rubber sheet under my cot sheet to protect the mattress, so that explains my need to sniff rubber bands and hot water bottles!

Ferrets.
I love the musky smell.
Now that is weird, right?

That is weird. Ferrets absolutely honk!

JudgeJ · 11/10/2022 11:58

Exhause fumes! My sweaty feet when I was still working, I'd take my shoes off in the car and sometimes wound up with more shoes in the car than in the house, the children used to gag!

anonacfr · 11/10/2022 16:33

Autumn countryside bonfires.

Hollowgast · 11/10/2022 17:08

Petrol, but specifically the smell of partially burnt petrol from something classic, inefficient and v8-ey. The petrol exhaust plus a whiff of unburned fuel is just delicious.

Vikinga · 11/10/2022 17:09

Petrol fumes, some rubber (or is it the glue?), black market pens, musty underground/tube smell. I never get to smell any of that anymore.

PinkRiceKrispies · 11/10/2022 17:19

Definitely petrol but also that smell when you go into a hardware store, the mix of wood and paint. Also the smell of new clothes.

Matches just after they've gone out, I love the smell of burnt matches.
The way pubs used to smell of stale beer and fags, miss it.

I love matches. DH lights a candle and calls me for a sniff of the match

Ferrets.
I love the musky smell.
Now that is weird, right?

Does the smell differ between sexes?
I had cuddles with a female ferret a while back, and she smelt musky but also sweet. I actually kept smelling my top for ages after. It was lovely.

BashfulClam · 11/10/2022 18:03

Steam, from the kettle, iron, a pan
