Children receiving cash benefits for not being absent from school

Is this a thing? Someone I know notorious for lying has claimed their child’s school will give each child £100 cash if they don’t have any absence in the academic year? I find it hard to believe when our school class seems to find it difficult to find the money to buy glue sticks!

My DD got a £10 book voucher! I would say no school could stretch to £100! I call BS!

Slightly off topic but I hate schools rewarding attendance. Of course some kids have days off for no good reason but plenty of others might miss afternoon registration for a hospital appointment or suffer from a long term condition with regular flare ups or break a bone or something. It’s not fair.

I really hope it's not a thing.

Up there with attendance awards for ableism if it is.

IceReckon · 10/10/2022 13:24

Highly doubt it. Imagine the complaints they'd get.
Aside from the waste of funds it's making children with eg diabetes/asthma feel punished for already having shit luck.

Is it a mainstream school ,?
I know some special schools will do rewards for various things as part of a child's individual learning plans.

Our children throw a pizza party for all the kids who don't miss school during the term, if they miss 1-3 days they get ice cream. Its really to encourage kids to go to school and not to play sick or not to try get off school for not reason, if they are sick they still get a magnet for the fridge. I think its a great idea, my kids have never managed not to miss school though and never get the pizza party but often get the ice cream And no, the kids that are sick or dont manage to get anything dont seem to get too upset about it, i know mine dont.

CheezePleeze · 10/10/2022 17:57

I can't see it myself.

Our school enters kids with 100% attendance into a raffle to win a mountain bike.

I'm not keen on this idea but it has improved attendance.

I can believe it to be honest.

My little brother got money for going to school in about 2010. Done allowance which he was paid each week. It blew my mind.

My kids used to get a £10 book voucher at the end of each academic year and they got a £20 voucher at the end of primary school for the 4 years. There were about 10 kids that had never missed a day so I think promising £100 would be crazy!
