Society sees women as humourless

Just that really - not just men but women do fall into it a bit as well. I see it in, for example, tweets quoting MN posts that are obviously satirical but it's like women can't possibly be satirical, they must actually be serious about it and that neurotic/weird/oversensitive.

I think there's this idea that when women get together all we talk about is men, babies/children and bitching about other women. We can't possibly, y'know, laugh about things and have jokes between one another like blokes do.

I think MN shows how fucking hilarious women can be, but there seems to be this idea that we're all terribly earnest. Yet at the same time not to be taken seriously. Funny that. No pun intended.

I agree with you other than I think mn just adds to the idea they aren’t funny tbh. A lot of people on here are extremely serious

Echobelly · 07/10/2022 19:22

Oh, there's definitely stuff you can roll your eyes at here, but there's also a lot of humour.

@Echobelly

"I think there's this idea that when women get together all we talk about is men, babies/children and bitching about other women."

If all you read is AIBU that's an accurate assessment.

Humour is subjective though, what's funny to one person is unfunny or offensive to another

FeralWitch · 07/10/2022 19:46

I’ve been on here since god was a boy, and I’ve had some proper, belly-laughing, wheezy moments.

Women are extremely funny, but a lot of men won’t admit it - plenty of times I’ve had a bloke roll his eyes at one of my one-liners, only to bloody nick it and repeat it later 🙄

HighlandPony · 07/10/2022 19:48

It’s not your tribe though is it? There’s very few folk in here that are like people I know in real life. I doubt many would get my humour. I don’t think women are humourless but there is an air on here of hoity toity humour police I think.

the80sweregreat · 07/10/2022 19:48

Women are funny.

FeralWitch · 07/10/2022 19:58

It’s definitely got more serious on here, but life has got a bit more humourless in general, so that’ll be reflected.

This place can be hilarious.

It's just lazy sexism.

Hillrunning · 07/10/2022 20:15

I find mumsnet hilarious. It's given me more 'laughing so hard I can't breathe' moments than any other channel.

I bet that women comedians have to work harder at it all. Women always do in occupations seen as more male dominated.
