I'm pregnant and instead of morning sickness I get evening diarrhoea and it's driving me insane.

I don't want to take Imodium, I'm living on bland food and even just toast for dinner and I'm still sat on the toilet with the worst griping pains 😩 midwife said it's one of those things but I'm losing the will to live.

Any tips or tricks would be amazing thank you x

Ooo I got that so badly!!
Nothing really helps with pregnancy one o found.
But when I was younger my mum used to give my brother and I banannas. People laughed but then I read somewhere they are really good, they naturally bung you up and provide nutrients.

Lulu45677 · 01/10/2022 22:19

Only Imodium , can you take it when pregnant?

OnceBitten25 · 01/10/2022 22:35

Flat cola 👍🏼

PinkArt · 01/10/2022 22:53

If it's always the evenings, have a look at what you're eating for breakfast. I have IBS and generally food triggers set diarrhoea off two meals time later. So something that disagrees with me at dinner would see me on the loo at lunch the next day. Could you avoid wheat, dairy etc - some of the most common triggers - in the mornings.
Peppermint tea helps when my tummy is bad. Not so much with the pooing itself but the associated cramps etc.

Brigante9 · 01/10/2022 23:11

I just used the non branded stuff from sainsburys. Are you not meant to take Imodium (same active ingredient) when pregnant?

elm26 · 01/10/2022 23:22

@Lulu45677 @Brigante9 no, it's not recommended sadly. I always have a box in my handbag and in my car as I have IBS anyway but my midwife said they don't know the effects it has on baby.

@PinkArt thank you, I have IBS too and I know my triggers. Dairy is the worst trigger for me but this is another level, worse than my usual IBS.

Fybrogel can be used to bulk up the stool (just double check with midwife)
sorry you are going through this. Toast might not help here

elm26 · 01/10/2022 23:24

@OnceBitten25 I can't stand coke or fizzy drinks in general but I might have to buy a can and let it go flat to see if it works, thank you.

@Johnnypiratesfriend urgh it's horrible isn't it! You've given me sudden memory flash backs of my Nanna giving me mashed banana as a kid when I was sick or had upset stomach! Thank you, have some in the fruit bowl so I'll try it, usually leave them for DH as I'm not a massive fan but they might be my new best friend 😂

Have you cut out all caffeine?

Try having allbran with added bran for breakfast and then lots of water thru the day

elm26 · 01/10/2022 23:26

@Hoolahulahoop thank you! I will look into this 😊

OP posts:
elm26 · 01/10/2022 23:27

@SeaToSki I have one cup of tea a day, don't drink coffee or fizzy drinks so it's not caffeine. Thank you, will grab some allbran.

A spoonful of sugar will flatten it instantly x

Something to soak up the excess liquid, psyllium husk (sp?)

I remember having constipation and diarrhoea at the same time, the liquid would force its way round the solid (far tmi!!). That couldn't be your problem could it? Quite common apparently.

Immodium is such awful stuff, felt like my digestion had stopped and my stomach was full of rocks, I'd rather spend all day on the loo. So you need a comfy loo seat, something to rinse yourself off then pat dry because you'll be sore from wiping and lots of reading material.

So sorry you're suffering, hope it ends soon.

Nannyamc · 01/10/2022 23:33

Try the fybrogel..it brings on soft positive stools. I use it after breakfast and have no diarrhoea during the day. It is classified as a food supplement and definitely regulated me.

elm26 · 01/10/2022 23:51

Thanks @Poppyseed14 x

@DoodlePug thank you, I'm definitely not constipated at all 😩 it's literally water TMI. X

try eating boiled eggs

TheScorpionandtheFrog · 02/10/2022 00:19

Psyllium husk plus arrowroot is pretty effective, a level teaspoon of each in a drink or soup for breakfast and again midday.

AllLopsided · 02/10/2022 12:00

You could try the BRAT diet - bananas (already mentioned), rice, apple purée, toast.

Can you take Pepto bismol? The tablets are less disgusting than the liquid. I find them gentler than Imodium and they help with both sickness and diarrhoea.

Or buscopan should help with the cramps, if you're allowed to take that. But take it regularly so it doesn't wear off!
