Who wants a General Election to be called soon?

FlorettaB · 27/09/2022 13:08

The latest budget has caused the value of the pound to plummet in relation to other currencies. This means that the price of fuel will increase beyond what we’ve already been seeing this year. Liz Truss has refused a windfall tax on energy companies. It seems that things are just getting worse. I can’t imagine the damage she’ll cause if this carries on.

Do you want a General Election?

YANBU - Yes
YABU - No

I suppose I would but I don't see why on earth the government would call one unless they really were forced to. I don't like everything about Labour, but for the love of God, literally anything has to be better than this shower of incompetent, ignorant, cruel bastards.

Unforgettablefire · 27/09/2022 13:11

Yanbu. Can't stand her or that smug look on her face either it's almost as if she's enjoying herself.

I never thought it was possible to feel nostalgia for Boris as PM.

These threads are pointless they won't call a general election untill they have too.

PersonaNonGarter · 27/09/2022 13:17

Honestly No. I thought the election period of the PM was bad enough.

I posted here that I was worried what we'd get instead.

I have very little idea what Labour would put in a manifesto but yes, I'd like a general election. A coalition might at least force the Tories to change. We're so far from a mixed economy....they look to be building exactly the model I don't want. Yes, I know it's not about me 😂

ShandaLear · 27/09/2022 13:24

We’ve had 3 prime ministers in 6 years and I can’t see Truss lasting much beyond Easter at this rate. A general election would, theoretically at least, give up some stability for a bit. This latest cabinet are the real dregs of the party - I’m less worried about their right wing views (though they’re also shite) than their sheer lack of ability or intelligence. I’m not convinced Labour at the moment is the answer, but they have got to be better than this rotten rotten government. My mum’s would be better at this point in time.

EmmaH2022 · 27/09/2022 13:27

Shanda I thought our lovely Queen would be greeting another one before the year was out.

Confuciusornis · 27/09/2022 13:31

It’s a complete shit show. I’m terrified Truss will try to boost her inevitably tanking poll numbers by talking tough about Russia and will end up goading Putin into nuking us all. In the meantime businesses across the country are going to go under because of soaring fuel costs, interest rates are going to soar meaning a bunch of repossessions, and people are really going to suffer.

RonObvious · 27/09/2022 13:53

I mean, I kind of do, because of the absolute horror show the government have evolved into, but then after all of the recent news, events, dramas, and political scandals, the idea of a general election makes me feel so very tired. I'm not sure I have the energy for one.

waffless · 27/09/2022 13:56

FlorettaB I dare to say you were one of the ones saying anyone but Boris. Shame I though your live was going to change with pushing Boris out.

User135644 · 27/09/2022 14:02

Never underestimate the English's love for the Tories. A country of cap doffers and forelock tuggers.

The people of this country voted for this mess of the last 12 years.

It's all a game to them.

Randomword6 · 27/09/2022 14:04

NO, YANBU, really should happen soon as Truss is so unpopular even with her own Party.

Hi Carrie. I’m not a Tory, so none of them were appealing to me politically.

Is there even a way they have to have a general election before it’s due? Can Labour demand it?

Hmmph · 27/09/2022 14:11

I definitely want a GE. But that is unlikely to happen- why would the Tory MPs vote to lose their jobs?

A more reasonable hope is that they get rid of Truss and get a different more reasonable leader before too long in their hope that they might get to keep their seats with someone a little less unpopular.
The GE had to happen by end of 2024. At the end of the day, the Tory MPs want to keep their seats (and preferably power). The forecast is that they currently won't with Truss. Therefore they have to get rid of her and get someone else before then (probably next year).

Tessasanderson · 27/09/2022 14:14

Initially i thought yes, a general election would be a good idea. HOWEVER.....

At a time where we have pretty much the most despicable Tory government. With the most incompetent and corrupt people running the country. People who haven't been voted in by us. People who repeatedly show contempt for anyone who isn't a multi millionaire.

Why is it that the possibility of Labour being in charge doesn't fill everyone with hope?

IMO whilst the Tories are guilty of being absolutely corrupt, Labour are just as guilty for their lack of opposition, lack of clear policies and basically being pathetic.

They are struggling to win a popularity contest with the political equivalent of Fred West. They ought to be ashamed of themselves and this is the reason i haven't voted since the Tories got into power. We get the government we deserve and this shower of shite reflects public opinion.

The government would have to call it which they won't do with dire polling they'll cling on till late 2024 and leave us all in rack and ruin.

Thinkbiglittleone · 27/09/2022 14:16

I wish one would be called, but it just simply won't happen.

I try to ignore any Tv debates or news headlines as I get so, so angry it is just destructive to me.

I do go and search elements of things if I hear something I feel I need to educate myself on, but on the whole, politics makes me more angry than I can explain. I get angry at how selfish our country has become, how naively divided we have become and how our standards (as a country) have slipped so low, that people still think this government it acceptable.

So yes, bring on an election, I will carry on with my (misplaced Angry) faith that the country will vote better.

blubberyboo · 27/09/2022 14:17

The problems with elections and changes of PM is that we always seem to get someone worse each time.
would a general election fix anything at all?

  1. Boris was a truly useless PM.

  2. This is down to him kicking any reasonable Tory out the party in 2019. He wouldn't allow the likes of Rory Stewart a place.

akkakk · 27/09/2022 14:17

What tosh - apparently Liz Truss has failed within days - impressive how so many people can forecast the future - of course it was going to cause instability in the markets they over-react to everything - give it time and it will settle down...

Besides her policies are breath of fresh air - someone actually doing something and getting on in an attempt to fix what is wrong - let's support and encourage.

And the alternative anyway is an embittered crowd of entitled folks who think that they are owed something but have no policies - no thanks!

Not really. I think it was caused by those who wanted Brexit. The Tories won in 2015 when they promised a vote, and in 2017 and 2019 when they were the only party saying they would Brexit as a result of the vote.

Brexit is supposedly "done" now. Therefore those Brexit wanting people can return to voting for other issues.

I think the number of people who love the Tories no matter what is fairly small.
