AIBU?
To accuse this neighbour of stealing my plant pot..
Lill7778 · 19/09/2022 20:57
I smoke. Yes it's a disgusting habit yada yada.. but it is what it is.
I put my cigarette butt's in a little plant pot next to the porch and empty it every couple of days. You wouldn't know it was there unless you knew I stood out there smoking, which this neighbour does as he sees me regularly.
Said neighbour lives a few doors down and is always on the bum, asking people for cigarettes and picking discarded ones up off the floor.
My other half has caught him snooping around near my front door a handful of times, obviously looking for cigarette butt's with anything left on them. He doesn't say anything he just styled It out and walked off.
At some point this evening 'somebody' has come up to my front door and pinched the plant pot I use to put my cigarettes in. It doesn't take a genius to work out who has done it. The other neighbours are non smokers and definitely not the sort to do something like that.
I couldn't care less about the cigarettes butt's, if he was that desperate I would've given him a cigarette if he had the decency to ask.. but the fact he's pinched the plant pot has really fucked me off. I liked that pot and may have had other plans for it.
So WIBU to confront him even though there's no concrete evidence that it's him?
A few years ago another of these plant pots with cigarette ends in went missing. It's only now I'm connecting the dots. Arsehole.
Am I being unreasonable?

To add.. its definitely somebody after the cigarettes and nothing ornamental as they left the garden ornaments completely untouched.

YABU for using a decent pot as an ashtray.
Whys that? It's easily washed
StoneofDestiny · 19/09/2022 21:04
Give up smoking, problem solved of it ever recurring? View the missing pot as donated to someone needy?

It doesn't solve the problem because the problem is that he's stolen it.. not the fact I smoke 😂
Joopy · 19/09/2022 21:10
I think you need a ring doorbell. No one should be taking anything from your property whether you smoke or not!!!
Lill7778 · 19/09/2022 21:12
It's blatant theft, it doesn't matter whether the pot was used to store cigarettes, dog poo or flowers. It's illegal (and bloody rude) to come onto somebodies property and steal things.
EfficientDynamics · 19/09/2022 21:12
Your neighbour must be in a dire situation if he's picking up dog ends
I've only ever seen tramps do that
Without evidence or a witness you can't prove anything

We cross posted, thank you! This is exactly how I feel. A ring door bell is a good idea. Are they discrete? I'd like to catch the sod in the act next time. Will go and check amazon for ring door bells now..

They're alcoholics I think. The woman he lives with sits outside the newsagents asking passers by for spare change.
I sympathise with anybody down on their luck but it doesn't excuse commiting acts of theft from your neighbours.
Yeah the lack of evidence is annoying, because I'd bet my savings on the fact its him.

I once had a large ornamental plant pot taken from my front doorstep during the night. A couple of days later I spotted it on the doorstep of a house just around the corner whilst walking the kids to school. It was definitely the same one as was an unusual colour and the plants were the same , so I picked it up and took it back. I was furious but also gobsmacked at the cheek and the stupidity of them displaying it at the front of the house.
A few weeks later I was walking to school again past the end of the street when a delivery man knocked on the door of the pot thief's house.....door was opened by my nextdoor neighbours sister. Make of that what you will.

Depends on whether you want to be accused of libel.
I doubt that somebody who picks tab ends up off the floor has the means or inclination to sue for libel.

The sister had clearly seen it when visiting your NDN and thought she'd have it for herself. What a cheek! Did you ever mention it to your NDN?
Dunnoburt · 19/09/2022 22:41
It'll be back in the morning when he's managed to get a smoke out of all the ends! 😃
Ein · 19/09/2022 22:53
Unless you’re a lot bigger and scarier-looking than me, I wouldn’t raise it with him. Arguing with an alcoholic thief weirdo who lives a few doors away? Nope.
But yes so so so annoying! This pot is gone. With the next pot, can you hide it or bring inside when not in use? I know you shouldn’t have to.
OnTheBrinkOfChange · 19/09/2022 22:58
Next time you see him say Oi mate give me my plant pot back. I saw you take it the other day.
BMW6 · 19/09/2022 23:25
Well I'd be inclined to get another pot, put your fag ends in but pour a little urine over them. Or bleach.
Lill7778 · 20/09/2022 07:31
I've put a note through his letterbox this morning simply saying "please return the plant pot"
Worst case scenario he wasn't responsible and spends a few minutes confused and wondering which strange neighbour posted it and why. Best case scenario I get my pot back.. hopefully.

😂
The thing is the pot often does have water in it to extinguish the cigarettes. I can't be certain that it did have yesterday but its likely.
Lill7778 · 20/09/2022 11:17
Well the plant pot has been returned.
He has just knocked and give it to my OH. He said it wasn't him that took it, it was his 'pal' apparently.
I fucking knew it was him.
LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 20/09/2022 11:21
Yanbu to be annoyed but it’s a sad situation :/
Glad you got it back with minimal conflict though!
whatsup00 · 20/09/2022 11:22
Offer him several cigs for it. Make it into some kind of joke so he's more likely to give it back. If you go over and scream at him he will just get defensive. Make a poster like for missing pets with a picture of the pot and stating there is a reward.
