In asking my husband not to vape in the house?

DH is an ex smoker, but has gone onto a vape instead of the cigarettes. He's tried to give up at various points in the last 10 years and this seems to be the most prolonged. I've nagged and nagged at him to stop. A vape is at least progress.

I hate the smell of the vape. He doesn't vape around the kids and he'll open a window, but I'll still go into either our room or the bathroom and there's a sickly sweet smell of strawberry vape liquid, or a hazy cloud which hasn't dissipated.

I feel like I can't make him stop vaping in the house as it's at least not actively harmful to do, just that I don't like it. Although he knows I don't like it and puts it away if he hears me coming...

If it changes anything, it's the liquid containing nicotine... He hasn't actually kicked the habit, just transferred it to the vape I suppose.

AIBU to ask him not to vape in the house?

Yanbu. Would a different flavour vape liquid be easier for you to handle? He should be respectful and either vape outside or vape by an open door

whatshouldIdo2022 · 15/09/2022 16:53

YANBU,DP vapes outside only and I still can't stand it, the smell of the liquid if it gets spilt on anything is so strong and it often gives me an instant headache. I don't think anyone can say definitively that it isn't harmful to breathe in either.

AspireMe · 15/09/2022 16:55

Can he get a vape pen instead? I'm a vaper and I hate those big chunky vapes that emit those horrible clouds that puff out loads of smoke with that sickly smell - plus, it doesn't even feel like an alternative to smoking either whereas vape pens puff out the tiniest amount of smoke with no lingering smell and has a more realistic "cigarette feeling"

JustTheOneSwan · 15/09/2022 16:55

Just a caution the nic is much lower in vapes so if he goes outside every time it might seem a piss take.

PixelatedLunchbox · 15/09/2022 16:58

YABU with all due respect, give the guy a break. Quitting smoking is SO hard and he's come this far. I would bet he would much rather be smoking the real stuff and if he has to go outside he may figure he might as well do so.

I feel like I can't make him stop vaping in the house as it's at least not actively harmful to do, just that I don't like it That's a perfectly valid reason. Plus there's not been long enough to fully assess whether vaping indoors is harmful or not to 'passive vapors'. Back in the 50s, the first links between passive smoking and lung cancer were noted, but legally smoking indoors wasn't banned until 2007...

youarntaguest · 15/09/2022 17:01

I think you would be being unreasonable it just a fruity smell. They do have the nicotine but not the tar which is most damaging to the lungs

PeloFondo · 15/09/2022 17:01

He has kicked the habit - he's quit smoking
Give him a bit of a break while he's switching over

FruitPastilleNut · 15/09/2022 17:05

He's been trying to quit for 10 years and seems to have finally managed it. Give him a break, suck it up and support him. Surely it's better than him starting smoking again? There is plenty of time for him to reduce vape use but in the earlier days then it's the best thing he can do now.

Lemonyfuckit · 15/09/2022 17:10

Maybe as people say he could use the pens which emit less vapour? My DH went on to vaping as a means to quit smoking (he now uses a very very low nicotine level in his vaper) but he does use one of the chunky ones that emit large clouds. I have to say I don't mind it though, I don't find that the smell or cloud lingers (maybe I've just got used to it!). I certainly find it very preferable to the smell of cigarettes.

Thanks everyone

Those fruity smells are grim. YANBU.

Mangogogogo · 15/09/2022 18:39

You’ve nagged him for 10 YEARS?! wtf

Royalbloo · 15/09/2022 18:41

It is a bit like being in a 90's disco at times...

TwoMonthsOff · 15/09/2022 18:42

Did he smoke his ciggies inside OP ?
i voted YANBU - nothing wrong with going outside especially if you have a garden/ outside area

TokidokiBarbie · 15/09/2022 18:44

I used to use a 50vg/50pg mix which didn't leave big clouds and you wouldn't know I even vaped if you walked in two mins later. Vaping was banned in the work trucks and I'd vape until 10 seconds before I turned into the yard. Afternoon driver would jump straight in and never noticed.

TokidokiBarbie · 15/09/2022 18:46

Also, vapers usually take a few hits here and there rather than a big dose every hour like a smoker. I'd have been outside 4-5 times an hour if I couldn't vape indoors.
