To ask for experiences around school absence for family funeral?

My last grandparent has just died, and we now have a date for the funeral.

My own DC are 7 and 9 and I want them to attend the funeral which is obviously on a schoolday.

I just wanted to ask for others experience in requesting a days absence for a family funeral. Is this likely to be granted by the school without too much trouble? I've no idea on the likelihood- I've never had to request absence in the past.

TIA

@YennefersDress no fine, just marked as unauthorised. I think they have to be off for a full week for a fine

Surely there would be a way to appeal the unauthorised absence mark and get it changed to an authorised absence, given the circumstances?

I would be deeply unhappy about that. I can’t see what in the world would make that kind of absence ‘unauthorised’ - surely you would be within your rights to appeal to the principal or board of governors?
