Evening all,

Sorry to post here just after advice/recommendations. I booked tickets for the DC to see a charity football match for their favourite YouTubers (Sidemen), at Charlton. Before booking I didn't think of the logistics of getting to Charlton from London, travel, and now maybe accommodation as there was a massive queue for tickets and wanted to surprise the DC.

Anyway, we were planning on going down for the day, seeing a few attractions as youngest DS's have never visited the capital as well as them wanting to lay flowers for our beloved Queen. But with timings of the match starting at 3pm train timetable not available atm (from where we are in the midlands they are listed few days before weekend) would not be able to fit much in.

I suggested to DH we maybe stop overnight, to travel down either the Fri (can get off work) and return Sat evening or travel Sat and return Sunday. Looking at prices though and 😞I looked at Premier Inn but just says 2 adults and 2 children, also laterooms ect. The prices are very high all over the city, I expected it with being the capital, but not that high. Especially after £150+ travel, not including oyster cards (no idea on these either). Luckily have quite a few Tesco Clubcard points saved for extra activities.

If anyone could point me in the direction of cheaper accommodation I would be very grateful.

I know I should check logistics before booking but it was a spur of the moment.

Thank you all in advance xxx

Prices are so high because so many people are travelling to London because of the Queen.

Doubt you'll find anything cheaper I'm afraid.

AtomicBlondeRose · 12/09/2022 21:56

Is it this week/weekend? I don’t think there will
be any cheap accommodation in London, it’s going to be at the very peak of demand I’m afraid. You could find somewhere on the outskirts and commute in and out - the underground goes quite far out so if you’re not planning on staying out very late that could be easiest.

mountainsunsets · 12/09/2022 21:57

London will be extortionate this weekend due to the Queen's funeral. There's no way you'll get cheap accommodation.

Lcb123 · 12/09/2022 21:59

You’d probably have more luck with accommodation if you stay out near Charlton and then travel into central London. But I reckon it will be mega busy. I live in south London and won’t be going anywhere central from Wednesday until next week

JustLurkingAway · 12/09/2022 21:59

I believe that's next weekend isn't it? So the 24th?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 12/09/2022 22:00

Sorry, but there will be massive demand over the next week or so. You really won’t find cheaper.

Westfacing · 12/09/2022 22:00

Is the match confirmed as going ahead?

Many of the London matches have been postponed because of police manpower issues.

Lavendersummer · 12/09/2022 22:01

Travel lodge usually cheaper. Look along the lines outside of London that make sense to you. They are cheaper outside of London, and usually near the train station as well.

PatriciaHolm · 12/09/2022 22:01

It's Saturday the 24 so the queen related issues should be done (and no laying flowers) - are you looking at the right date?

SavoirFlair · 12/09/2022 22:01

Check the voting scores on your post, @WineOclock2019 . That’s all you need to know.

Aubriella · 12/09/2022 22:02

Is it this weekend?

I’m not familiar with the area but the Travelodge London Crystal Palace is 6 miles from Charlton Athletic and it’s £96 per night for 2 adults and 2 kids.

What kind of budget are you looking at? Try booking.com , sometimes you can get good deals if you make an account with them.

larry4PM · 12/09/2022 22:03

What are the exact dates and areas you need?

Aubriella · 12/09/2022 22:05

Or if it’s next Friday (24 Sep), Travelodge Lewisham is £70 per night for 2 adults and 2 children.

London is going to be heaving this week. So hotel prices will all be high.

Apparently Green Park and BP are also heaving.

Good luck...

CatOfTheLand · 12/09/2022 22:07

Try staying in Woolwich. It's very close by (bus or two train stops) has a premier inn type hotel in the centre or plenty of Airbnbs and is on the crossrail so 15mins to Liverpool st, 19 to Tottenham Court Road etc. It's residential and up and coming (eg. Can be rough) but there's nice cafes for breakfast and you're a taxi ride from blackheath or Greenwich for a nice dinner

itbemay · 12/09/2022 22:08

CAFC is close to North Greenwich tube station - not walking but bus/taxi so you're linked with transport. There's also the cable cars over the river. Also hotels around North Greenwich so I'd focus on staying near there. Enjoy!

itbemay · 12/09/2022 22:09

Or even Woolwich for that matter. Access to the elizabeth line / DLR

Longdistance · 12/09/2022 22:14

Stay somewhere outside of London? Any towns en route with a Premier Inn nearby?

ConnieSaks · 12/09/2022 22:16

@Aubriella I thought I was very familiar with the area - but the listing refers to a nearby tube - love to know where that is! I suppose they could mean the overground (which is not too far!). There is a bus that goes all the way to the British Museum - only takes an hour and a half! (trains 25 mins or so - 10 - 15 minute walk to a station). Would I’d guess be well over an hour to get to/from Charlton?

Yes it is the 24th. Was booked a few weeks ago so didn't expect the unfortunate happening. Thank you to all the replies who have been helpful xx

Obviously if it was this weekend we would be cancelling our plans as the Queens death has very much been upsetting in our household and would be at home watching the funeral and news updates like we have this week. Its the following week. The Charity match is still going ahead next week, as are Premier and EFL leagues games are this weekend. Unsure why he votes are AIBU as this is something my DC have been excited for weeks, more so now to pay respect for our Queen and lay flowers whilst we are visiting the area. I only asked for advice if anyone knew on how to do this on a smaller budget. We obviously didnt know this would happen when booking. Sorry if I've caused offence to anyone :( xxx

Unsure on your emoji on the confused face. We have been very much in favour for The Queen. If our plans had landed this weekend we'd decline. We booked these tickets weeks ago. There are plenty of events still happening even this week and the previous weekend , ours isn't until the following week. Theyve held cricket and rugby matches. Our trip isn't until the weekend after. I was after helpful advice, as i understand the capital is going to be extremely busy. Its the 24th, but my DC still want to pay their respect so was hoping for helpful advice xx
