Bank holiday for Queen's funeral

Hello

Our workplace sent out an email advising they were honouring the bank holiday and everyone could have the day off.

An hour later they said they have decided actually not to and people can put in an annual leave request for this if they wish too.

Is this right? Can they do that? It doesn't affect me as I only work 2 days a week but I feel this is off for other staff.

Well it's a bit shit of them to go back on their original decision but yes of course they can.

This bank holiday falls outside of existing employment contracts so is up to each business to decide how to handle it. Ours has given us the day off, which to be honest I'm surprised about.

This explains it but employers dont have to pay bank holidays and can include them within your annual leave:
