AIBU?
To ask how you explain 'woo' stuff like this, if you believe in it?
cathycoi · 11/09/2022 11:43
I dreamt about someone this week (an ex) after not having thought of them for almost a year.
Because of the dream, they'd then been on my mind a little the last couple of days.
Then, while I was standing washing some dishes today, I had the most strange and unexpected urge today to contact him and ask if he'd like to meet.
I dried my hands, left the kitchen, walked to my phone, and he'd messaged me asking if I'd like to meet. It was so surreal that I thought I was dreaming
If you're a believer in such things, what do you think the explanation is for how/why they happen?
alwaystrainers · 11/09/2022 11:59
This fascinated me too. I often think of someone and then there'll be an update on Facebook. I don't think the algorithms and siting are "that" good!
PalePurplePumpkin · 11/09/2022 12:03
You're asking the wrong people if you want an explanation from 'woo people'.
They believe in woo, so you'll get all sorts of fanciful airy fairy 'explanations' 😂
Everything other than a massive coincidence, or digging deeper which could uncover all manner of things like you seeing someone on TV who looked a bit like him, without realising etc and this brought him to mind.
notsosoftanymore · 11/09/2022 12:07
This happens frequently in our family and occasionally with a good friend. I think we are connected to others in inexplicable ways. I just enjoy it.

Fair point!
I am just completely baffled by it. I am not a believer is such things but I feel like this is what people mean when they talk about manifesting something.
Madness.
ShinyMe · 11/09/2022 12:16
I think that's a fairly common thing to happen. I think that something will have triggered your memories of them subconsciously, a news report, a song on the radio, something seemingly insignificant that you didn't notice. If they happened to hear/see the same thing too, then that would explain it.
coffeet · 11/09/2022 12:16
I'm definitely a woo person! Can I ask how your relationship ended? As for an airy fairy explanation we've just entered Mercury retrograde which has a tendency to bring back the past😂
SavoirFlair · 11/09/2022 12:18
the weathers changed, endorphins are lower, two lonely people think of their default option and message each other
no “woo” here at all from what I can see
NancyDrooo · 11/09/2022 12:20
I’m generally not a woo person at all, but I do wonder at things like white feathers falling at apt moments, and rainbows appearing like last week when the Queen died.
I’m a bigger believer in pure and simple coincidence, I think. And a good dollop of confirmation bias.

Not in the U.K. so not the weather!
I did wonder if there was something else though along those lines. The time of year or something.

Horribly and unexpectedly (unexpected to me, anyway...).
(And in case anyone wonders why I would therefore think about texting him to meet up - I had no intention of acting on it. Hence it was the most absolutely random and unexplained thought, minutes before he actually did text me).
Aretheyhavingalaugh · 11/09/2022 12:22
I love all this spooky stuff but in reality there's probably a logical answer
coffeet · 11/09/2022 12:24
Do you think perhaps you're crossing his mind because he's feeling bad? Maybe he owes you an explanation. Ashamed to say I'd be far too curious and probably want to meet!
GreenEggsAndBabycham · 11/09/2022 12:26
I'm not really woo at all and tend to think it's a load of bollocks.
BUT.
In 2001 when I was 19 and found out I was unexpectedly pregnant with my oldest DC, the father was furious and walked out on me the night I told him, telling me to get rid of it. I was distraught and cried pretty much all night. I had no phone credit so couldn't even call my friends for support.
At the time my mum was out of the country for an overseas family wedding, and we were not particularly close geographically or emotionally - we spoke on the phone maybe every 3/4 weeks and had spoken the previous week before she left.
But the next morning she rang me at 7am wanting to know if I was ok, because she had dreamed that I was scared and alone and 'in torment' (those were her words). She's never done anything like that before or since and it still blows my mind a bit
mamabear715 · 11/09/2022 12:27
It happens a LOT. Just because we're all 'smart' these days, we lose these old ways. But sometimes they still get through! Agree with @coffeet about the mercury retrograde too.
Dervel · 11/09/2022 12:29
Simple. If one entertains an idealism (that there is a supernal portion of reality) metaphysical worldview as opposed to the materialism/physicalism (that all is essentially the material world and nothing else) one. It opens the doors to all manner of possibilities.
minticecreamisjustok · 11/09/2022 12:30
Yes I had this, I do believe our minds can connect beyond speaking, more so with people we've had a strong connection too. Although I have been able to pick up things from strangers that I knew nothing about.
However just because he has come back, it doesn't mean anything good will come of it, so beware!
Kanaloa · 11/09/2022 12:31
Could have been anything from a mad coincidence to a hidden reason you didn’t notice. When it snows I always think of my first boyfriend, because it snowed unexpectedly on our first date. So if I was single and it suddenly snowed I could imagine going to contact him to find he’d contacted me, because we would have thought of each other. It could easily be something like that - some situation has stirred old memories in both of you.
Blossomandbee · 11/09/2022 12:37
I think there's so much we don't know and understand about the brain and mind. It's all energy and electrical activity, what's to say we can't 'tune in' to each other like radios pick up stations. I don't think it's woo as such just not understood.
RaRaRaspoutine · 11/09/2022 12:37
I believe in manifestation and have done this a few times.
Genevieve99 · 11/09/2022 12:43
Another one suggesting Mercury retrograde. A very likely time for exes to get back in touch!

What does this actually mean? How does it influence such things?
FrecklesMalone · 11/09/2022 13:36
Way of the wyrd. The pagan belief that we have invisible connections between us. Stronger between those we know and love or have loved. And these vibrate when we think of each other. Wedding rings are meant to stop the flow of the love one and reduce the likelihood people having affairs! I love this as though a complete atheist it explains so weird shit that has happened. One was my ex who I lived with for 3 years. He hadn't had any contact with his parents for 6 years when the phone rang. He went pale and said it's my Mum and it was! Also when I was travelling in Asia aged 18 I got very ill, the same time I was taken to hospital my mum woke up in bed just knowing something was very wrong. Pre mobiles etc she didn't find out for a couple of days.
PetraBP · 11/09/2022 14:42
In my house, all the lights started flickering earlier in the week.
I subsequently found out that it was around the time the Queen died…
Very woo.
