will I be paid 19th as it's a bank holiday?

Sorry, I'm meant to be paid on the 19th.
As it has now been declared a bank holiday, will I still be paid or will it be Friday? As it's a sudden change that's why I'm wondering?

Obviously I know I always get paid the Friday before a bank holiday but unsure on this one?

If you usually get paid the Friday before a Mon BH, you'll get paid on the Friday.

NotRightNowPlease · 10/09/2022 20:03

Thanks for this, I was wondering too.

TinySaltLick · 10/09/2022 20:07

Surely depends on if your payroll team decide to bring it forward or not?

ManateeFair · 10/09/2022 20:08

You should get paid on the Friday, I would have thought, but you should ask your payroll people.

Lockheart · 10/09/2022 20:09

You're asking the wrong people, this is a question for your employer.

RewildingAmbridge · 10/09/2022 20:09

Or would be too short notice for our payroll to change at this stage. I think this depends on your organisation, a small independent business you're more likely to get paid early. 100s/1000s of staff less likely as not enough time to process

Butterflyfluff · 10/09/2022 20:09

This BH has happened very suddenly - not all payroll departments will be able to process pay runs in time to bring it forward by a day

Sally99 · 10/09/2022 20:10

I can't believe they've chosen the Monday rather than the Sunday. It will cause a huge amount of disruption to businesses at very short notice.

Do banks process funds on a bank holiday ? I always thought it was the bank who held it up.

TheDressinggownofdoom · 10/09/2022 20:13

Check with your employer.

I get paid on the 18th and when it falls on a Monday, I can actually 'see' the money in my account on the Friday as a pending transaction. So work obviously pay me 4 days beforehand and its floating around in the banking system for that time.

If they'd picked Sunday there'd be no end of berks whining about not getting a bank holiday. It has to be sometime and you're never going to please everyone.

Already a holiday in Scotland that weekend

mindtheGAAP · 10/09/2022 20:17

Your payroll dept or payroll department will need to process their payroll one day early. Payroll is paid by BACS and needs 3 days, so you're normal pay day of Monday 19th would have the payment put through and authorised on Thursday before. So the BACS will need to be authorised on the Wednesday instead to ensure payment for Friday 16th.

mindtheGAAP · 10/09/2022 20:17

Should say or payroll provider!

The customer chooses the ‘value date’ and the bank advises which dates are possible.

Bank Holidays are not valid for the standard three day payments so you can’t choose it as an option.

Mosts employers paying on 19th would be planning to send the instruction on Thursday (cut off around 4pm) but will have to send Wednesday 4pm to get the payment made on Friday.

Not sure what will happen with payments already entered with a valid value date of the 19th though.
