I have found myself getting increasingly irritated/ incensed by this.

Is it an unreasonable request ?
I'm losing my grip on reality here!

Why are you asking him. If you don’t want him doing it then tell him to stop doing it.

Well, without context nobody can say if it's an unreasonable request.
However if it's annoying you that much, tell him to stop by all means.
