To think it'd be easier to buy weed than this?

I have a newly diagnosed, chronic bowel condition. There's a specific type of medication for it that gets to the root of the issue and should make a big difference to my life very quickly - my consultant assured me of this.

I waited two years to be 'bad' enough to be referred to gastroenterology.

Nearly a year for a (phone) consultation.

It took five days for the prescription to reach me in the post, because of postal delays/strikes.

No local pharmacy would order it in for me. I had to go to Boots.

Boots did order it, on Wednesday, saying it would be in by 3 tomorrow. It wasn't. It isn't in by 3 today either. I MIGHT be in by 3 tomorrow, but they wouldn't be able to dispense it, because of pharmacist shortage. So now my hopes are on Monday being the day it finally arrives, more than 10 days after it was initially prescribed.

I've lived with the issues for over two years, so I should be used to it, but I just feel so depressed and frustrated to have to go through all this just to get a box of pills. The weekend stretches ahead and I will v likely need to take strong painkillers throughout. My energy levels are depleted (because of condition) and I just want to go to bed.

I know it's not life threatening, I have absolute perspective on that. I just feel a bit let down really. AIBU to think I could prob go on Facebook and find a dealer quicker than doing all this?

Also, not to drip feed, this is medication I will likely need for the rest of my life, how on earth am I going to do this every month?

Its ridiculous you can't get anyone to fill a prescription. Look for one that will prescribe methadone, hopefully they would be less judgemental.

It's a bile acid binder, it's not like I'm trying to get crack!

This might be a completely stupid thing to suggest but could an online pharmacy such as pharmacy2U be any use? They get the prescription straight from your GP and then send it out.
I am on different medications aswell but they send out Diazepam to me by post so it might be worth a try?

Thelnebriati · 09/09/2022 15:45

Have they said what the problem is, its it supply issues?

Maybe once GP has set it up on system as repeat, but this is the initial prescription from the consultant.

Ask your doctor to set up an automatic recurring prescription for you. That way it should be reordered automatically in time for when you need it.

Don't be tempted to go to a dealer . I know someone who got hooked on crack cocaine because the dealer laced her weed with it . Try and grow your own .

If you need it every month then I presume your consultant has told you how to get it from now on, either asking for it to be put on repeat prescription at the doctors or hospital pharmacy? My dd has a chronic bowel condition and I drop the prescriptions in to the doctors every month then collect from my local pharmacy.

Yes the medication will be going on my regular repeat. He said it was sometimes an 'order in' medication but generally readily available. I must just live in a black spot.

Some of DDs are order in ones and have occasionally had manufacturing issues so I understand how bloody frustrating it can be!

I thought you genuinely wanted weed then and had a issue sourcing it. FYI it's a fantastic pain killer. Grin

Hope you manage to get your meds sorted x

takemetomybeach · 09/09/2022 16:23

I have UC and Pentasta (Mesalazine in suppository form) has been an absolute life changer for me. It took 2 years to get diagnosed and then 6 months until I was prescribed the right medicine. Even now I struggle to get it in time.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 09/09/2022 16:36

I fully believe that Boots has a secret rule that says 'always tell the patient it can be ordered in 24 hours, even if the medication hasn't been available for the last six months. That way, they can't take their prescription somewhere else where they've got it in stock'.

I stick to the independent near home who will always tell me if something is in stock before taking the prescription and never messes me around with orders.

Yeah, this sounds about right

Hahaha, tbh I would absolutely have some if it were to hand. Well, once the kids were asleep.

I always found our teeny tiny local pharmacy much more helpful than Boots for things like this. They are honest with me about supply issues, contact my GP themselves to request an alternative if they are aware of a supply problem.

When I've had repeat prescriptions of something they wouldn't usually stock, each time they've asked me will I be getting another prescription for it, so that they could pre-order it in for me in advance of the prescription.

Boots have never gone to that kind of trouble for me and my family.

Bollocks989 · 09/09/2022 18:12

Can you trigger your next prescription early?

Bollocks989 · 09/09/2022 18:13

(That's what I am doing for my drug, gives time for faffing or chasing around).

You can't 'lace' cannabis with crack cocaine. It's an urban legend.

Yeah that categorically did not happen.

You aren't wrong it's much easier to buy weed than it is to file a prescription. For one thing it can get dropped off to your house within half an hour of ordering. Certainly don't get that service from Lloyd's.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 09/09/2022 20:23

Unfortunately brexit has had a big impact on many medications availability in the UK. As predicted. Hope you get sorted soon.

I'm glad (sorry) it's not just out boots that's going to shit, always ah yes come in after 430 pm friday, oh maybe tuesday.... Thankfully we have a friend that works there most of the time so she will say to go to Lloyds if they're going to take days.

@unicormb fwiw I HAVE bought diazepam and weed previously when the drs/pharmacist have been slow/useless.
