Had a smear the other week and got a text today saying that I need to go for a follow up appointment and would get a referral letter within 28 days.

I called the GP and spoke to the receptionist (who was wonderfully shitty at first!) who explained that my smear was abnormal so I need to go for a colonoscopy.

I then missed a call but had a voice mail from the hospital saying they’ve booked me in for tomorrow morning and they’ll call me in the morning to see if I can make it. (I can, but I’m on my period so assuming it’s like a smear don’t think they can do it.) I think they’ve had a cancellation and I’m very lucky it’s this quick but also that’s put me on edge.

I know this is SO routine - I hope - but just having a small panic now. I’m just being a baby, aren’t I?

Hi OP. Lots of people have irregularities when they have smears. It may be nothing and they are just checking. I had polyps once or twice. Try and remain positive. Worry once you know if its something to worry about. No point in worrying twice.

Not being a baby at all, that would send me into a mini anxiety spike too and I'm not prone to anxiety particularly. Buuuuuut, you are right, they've had a cancellation and are offering it to you, when you hear hooves think horse not zebra! All will be well, deep breaths, pop some crappy Netflix on or an audiobook and distract yourself.

Oh thanks autocorrect! Not a colonoscopy, obviously, but a colposcopy.

They only check for HPV now so assume it’s that, but do they standardly do a colposcopy for that?

@londonlass71 thank you, you’re absolutely right about worrying twice. Good excuse for a glass of wine and to guilty smoke a fag hidden in the corner of the garden though I suppose.

@Benjaminsniddlegrass thank you. Reinventing the speculum to help us all out in my head as we speak.

I hope you are okay and it was nothing .

It's completely normal to be worried, you're definitely not being a baby, hope everything goes ok today if it happens.
Why does every surgery have a completely arsey receptionist that everyone dreads getting? They must advertise for a new one everytime one leaves "Angry arsey twat wanted"
