Dss left a bowl of sausage pasta (Cumberland sausage, tomatoes, red onion, garlic and smoked paprika) and garlic bread out. French bulldog ate the lot.

Didn’t think much of it at first but now he seems a bit off, laying funny, belly making noises - my friend has just said garlic is poisonous to dogs. Google says only in large amounts!?

Anyone know? Have rang vet but out of hours now so awaiting a callback!

Some dogs would find garlic and onion toxic, but others will be fine.

It sounds like he’s just had too much rich human food in his tummy to be honest. He may be bloated and uncomfortable.

The vet may want him in to check; may induce vomiting; put him on a drip ; or may just tell you to starve him for 24 hours and watch.

Try not to worry as there’s not a lot you can do without speaking to the vet.

Hope it goes well.

I would definitely contact a vet- onion is poisonous to dogs

They have to eat a lot of onion or garlic to get to the level of toxicity that would be harmful.

What's more likely is the dog is stuffed and because he isn't used to it, is feeling it...

I would first help to throw up

I've never yet seen a case of onion or garlic toxicity. Belly making noises isn't bad- better the guts churn too much than stop. Main risk is pancreatitis but too late now basically, though he'll probably be fine.

On reflection, actually the main risk is a Frenchie that ate that little lot gassing you to death with the most noxious farts ever created . I'd open a window now if I was you.

With onions, a toxic dose is around 15-30 grams per kilogram of the dog’s weight (so about .5% of the total body weight).
