So we came back via Dunkirk on Friday. Arrived at the port at 7am. There was a sign saying there was heavy traffic around Calais.
No traffic at Dunkirk. The French border guard didn't even look at our passports. Just waved us through. The UK border checks were a bit more - even longer than when we left the UK. I could see the Dutch car ahead was there for about 3 - 4 minutes before going through. We took about 2 minutes.
Then we had to go via security to ensure that we had no one hidden in our car. None of that happened when we entered France via Dover.
But Dunkirk was fine .
Calais seems to be a nightmare though. Not enough border controls open and long delays.
I would guess that the more detailed checks on EU passengers might take more time - the security checks were the same as before for searching cars. At least there weren't customs delays.
I feel for people caught in this.
