Who wants to see my buried treasure find?

Found this today digging in the garden. No idea what it is, or how old it is, or if it’s even really old! But very exciting for me! Any guesses on what it is or advice on how to clean it up?

Match box cover?

Ponoka7 · 04/09/2022 14:20

Clean it up a bit and there should be a FB group that you can put a picture on. The guy whose just sold the Henry 111 coin for over £500k thought it wasn't anything special until he put it on FB.

Is one side mother-of-pearl? Rest metal?

dudsville · 04/09/2022 14:22

How exciting! Is it an old wallet, but maybe made of plastic?

BurriedTreasure · 04/09/2022 14:22

@Ponoka7 £500k would be lovely right now! Hell £5 would be nice 😂 I’ve had a look for Facebook groups and I must be using the wrong words because I can’t find anything?

@Druyhbf ooh might be?

A brooch? The indent at the top could be where the pin was.

BurriedTreasure · 04/09/2022 14:44

I don’t think it’s a broach, I think it might be the match box cover, I’ll add another photo, it’s squished to make that shape (ignore the muddy fingers!)

Maybe a Vesta case?

WaffleAndGelato · 04/09/2022 14:47

I thought it was an etch a sketch 🤣

Bombalina · 04/09/2022 14:48

Ah, didn’t realise it had four sides. Yes, match box cover seems possible.

MagSulph101 · 04/09/2022 14:49

Mirror?

Flaunch · 04/09/2022 14:49

might be silver. If you’ve got any tinfoil wrap it up in it, spit in it and rub it a bit. If it stinks of egg when you open it up it’s silver :)

abbarules · 04/09/2022 14:49

Intriguing… was it buried deeply? Can you use a cotton bud to gently clean it up?

raindon · 04/09/2022 14:50

Bus pass holder?

Or you had egg for lunch haha

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 04/09/2022 14:51

It does look like a vesta case. Nice find. If its silver you could probably straighten it a little and clean it yourself. A jeweller might be happy to help!

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 04/09/2022 14:53

You could try posting it on www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisthing/ — I've seen the people there make a positive ID on the weirdest things in no time.

Bagpiss · 04/09/2022 14:54

Looks like a matchbox cover, and the opening side edge is where you'd strike the match through.

ScabbersChin · 04/09/2022 15:11

Go on Things Found in Walls on Facebook. They’ll know what it is. And also it’s an AMAZING page x

BurriedTreasure · 04/09/2022 16:31

Thanks everyone! I’ll have a go with the tin foil tonight and see if I can clean it up a bit, and I’ll try those sites and see if we can get more information about it 😁

Fascinating!

MaryHoldTheCandleSteadyWhileIShaveTheChickensLeg · 04/09/2022 16:47

If you have a local(ish) museum, email them a photo or put it on their FB page.

BurriedTreasure · 04/09/2022 17:06

@MaryHoldTheCandleSteadyWhileIShaveTheChickensLeg (fascinating name!) I’ll give that a try too, thanks!

You're welcome!

You might even strike lucky and they may offer to clean it up for you.

I worked in a museum that had a connection to a Young Archaeologists club, and they would have been pleased to use it as a prop in teaching how to carefully clean archaeological finds.
