Found this today digging in the garden. No idea what it is, or how old it is, or if it’s even really old! But very exciting for me! Any guesses on what it is or advice on how to clean it up?

Match box cover?

Clean it up a bit and there should be a FB group that you can put a picture on. The guy whose just sold the Henry 111 coin for over £500k thought it wasn't anything special until he put it on FB.

Is one side mother-of-pearl? Rest metal?

How exciting! Is it an old wallet, but maybe made of plastic?

A brooch? The indent at the top could be where the pin was.

I don’t think it’s a broach, I think it might be the match box cover, I’ll add another photo, it’s squished to make that shape (ignore the muddy fingers!)

Maybe a Vesta case?

Ah, didn’t realise it had four sides. Yes, match box cover seems possible.

Mirror?

might be silver. If you’ve got any tinfoil wrap it up in it, spit in it and rub it a bit. If it stinks of egg when you open it up it’s silver :)

Intriguing… was it buried deeply? Can you use a cotton bud to gently clean it up?

It does look like a vesta case. Nice find. If its silver you could probably straighten it a little and clean it yourself. A jeweller might be happy to help!

You could try posting it on www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisthing/ — I've seen the people there make a positive ID on the weirdest things in no time.

Looks like a matchbox cover, and the opening side edge is where you'd strike the match through.

Thanks everyone! I’ll have a go with the tin foil tonight and see if I can clean it up a bit, and I’ll try those sites and see if we can get more information about it 😁

I worked in a museum that had a connection to a Young Archaeologists club, and they would have been pleased to use it as a prop in teaching how to carefully clean archaeological finds.
