Freaked myself out telling a big lie

For no reason. Went to the library to pay for some lost books. When the lady asked where I had lost them I told her that I had just left my ex partner and they were at his house so I couldn’t return them. 😣I don’t even have an ex partner. Why on earth did I say that? I also have a new baby so worried they are going to call social services or something. Why. Why. Why.

How did you actually lose them?

Champagne2023 · 03/09/2022 16:29

Unless you were black and blue why would you think she would ring social services?

cathol · 03/09/2022 16:30

Why are they calling social services?

Royalbloo · 03/09/2022 16:31

They won't be calling anyone...

Rainyblackcoat · 03/09/2022 16:31

I lost them when I moved house which is it what I was planning on saying. Somehow I panicked and a completely untrue story came out. It was like I was watching myself say nonsense with no ability to stop it coming out of my mouth.

Why would she ring social services over some lost library books?

senua · 03/09/2022 16:32

When the lady asked where I had lost them ...
Surely the answer to that is "if I knew that they wouldn't be lost."

squashyhat · 03/09/2022 16:34

You know she pressed that big red button under her desk and the police are on their way don't you? RUN!

Rainyblackcoat · 03/09/2022 16:34

Because I had baby DS with me she told her than I had left the books at an ex house and couldn’t go back and get them because we weren’t on speaking terms. And no doubt looked very freaked out as she offered me a sit down. I was freaked out. But with myself. And I’ve just been an anxious mess for weeks. Which I appreciate she doesn’t know so wouldn’t affect whether she phoned anybody

It’s just your mind protecting you.

You didn’t want to get into things as you’ve been under stress so you made up some shit to deflect her.

It’s perfectly human, no need to worry about it.

MuggleMe · 03/09/2022 16:53

Getting objective here, there's nothing SS would be worried about if what you said was true, you've escaped a bad situation, well done.

Vallmo47 · 03/09/2022 17:20

If anything the lady just emphasised with your situation OP, no need to worry about her. Just don’t lie again, no point and clearly you feel like shit about having done it. Forgive yourself and move on- she will not be reporting anything.
