Hi MNers! So wondering how to respond to this text… if at all!

I live in a rented flat above a restaurant. Building all owned by one person, and our electric meter is in their cellar.

Been texting intermittently for about two weeks asking if we can have pic of the meter for the electric company (who asked for it by 29th aug, which I mentioned). Been away or else might have popped down. Heard nothing back from the co-owner.

Finally my partner dropped a text yesterday and got an immediate reply (it’s not his place but he lives with me).

I texted to say thanks for getting back to us and could they send the reading.

Got an apology for the delay, followed by a long-winded explanation about why they replied to partner but not me, a pic of the meter, finally followed by:

’Not that I have to explain myself to you.’

Bit flabbergasted at the totally random weird rudeness 😂 What would you say?!

To clarify: they don’t own the building - we have the same landlord!

I'd say: 'Thank you. Can we put some thing in place so this doesn't happen again? You can understand I want to be on top of my energy use.'

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 02/09/2022 20:51

I wouldn’t bother responding.

LondonLovie · 02/09/2022 20:51

I wouldn't respond to the rude bit, but I would be saying I'd need access every x months get the reading for my metre.

NumptiesIncorporated · 02/09/2022 20:59

I'm not sure if it was intended the way it sounded? Maybe they realised that it was a bit of a long winded explanation and it was unnecessary - and really meant something like 'you probably didn't need to know all that'.

Just a possibility.

Hankunamatata · 02/09/2022 21:01

I'd just reply thanking them for meter picture

Yes I wonder if this is what they meant and it's come across badly.

Thanks for the alternative perspective!

I hadn’t thought of this, but to be honest I’ve gone back and looked at the text messages and I just think there’s no way it was meant like this. It’s also the only message with a full stop at the end (it’s a youngish woman, normally kisses at the end etc.). Pretty certain it was meant exactly as it sounds..!

I would contact the landlord and ask them what the process is for getting the metre reading each month, as the neighbour has said they are not responsible for providing it.

Thanks, yeah it’s not ideal really having to hassle them for weeks to get a reading!

Defo, I think it has the potential to affect our bills if we’re not on time with the reading. 😳

I would reply saying

"Well you do actually, thanks for doing so 🤗"

I wonder whether your partner will start to get texts off her. It's no coincidence she responded to him and not you.
