To ask for short haul/European break recommendations

Sorry for posting in AIBU, shamelessly looking for traffic.

DH and I got married in March this year. We've had 4 losses, latest being yesterday an Ectopic which I'm now being treated for.

Between the wedding, buying our new house, blending 2 families and commuting between London & the Midlands, we're utterly exhausted and emotionally spent. We love the life we are creating and we feel very grateful to have all that we do. However, we just need a break away. Our respective children are going to be with their other parents over October half term. Where can we go for 3 nights which will be far enough to be a break but near enough to only be a short flight? We want some downtime, a nice hotel, great food, museums and lovely walks.

Any recommendations please?

I'm sorry, it sounds like you've had a rough time. 💐
I was also going to suggest Budapest! A day at the spa, a day of history and sightseeing, nice walk along the river and a boat trip.....it's a really interesting city and quite reasonably priced.

Madrid is fabulous. Ticks all of your boxes. Seville has fewer galleries etc but is very beautiful and likely to still be warm. Florence has it all but fly to Pisa and take the train across. Easy.

I could go on. Also consider destinations reachable on the train if you have easy access to St Pancras. So much more relaxing than flying. Amsterdam, Paris and Lille are all gorgeous.

A favourite occupation of mine. 😊

I was recently recommended Palermo - I have not booked anything yet but looked lovely! Worth a look?

So many lovely places. DH and I went to Lisbon. Also love Croatia, Venice, Prague. Greece is more expensive generally because further but I'd love to go there. Mostly for 3 nights I'd go for city breaks but others may have more rural suggestions

Sirzy · 02/09/2022 10:44

We have just been to Toulouse for a long weekend which was stunningly beautiful

It was never "on my list" we only went there for a Grand Prix a few years ago but I was really pleasantly surprised by how gorgeous the City was and how much there was to do and see around there

So sorry for your losses....I think a trip away is a great idea.

Another vote here for Budapest.....went there for work a couple of months ago and fell in love. Amazing architecture, fabulous food and some great sites. Prepare to cry at 'the shoes' though.

minipie · 02/09/2022 10:50

Another vote for Lisbon and Budapest. Amalfi coast maybe? Granada and Seville. Marrakech would be reliably sunny whereas Europe may not be.

So sorry for your losses, I hope you find a lovely break .

Rapidtango · 02/09/2022 10:56

Copenhagen, Berlin, Amsterdam.

Kotor in Montenegro is lovely for a short break. Lots of decent restaurants and loads to see. Lovely place for strolling around!

skippy67 · 02/09/2022 11:11

Madrid is a fabulous city. Great food, easy to get around and the weather is usually good in October too. I lived there for 3 years and loved it.
