An itch you can't itch

AIBU to think someone must know the solution to how to sooth an itch you literally can't itch?

Had surgery today on my hand. I have stitches across the back of my hand and between two fingers. The whole thing is tightly covered in bandages from finger tips to past my wrist, no access at all even with a ruler or pencil.

So what the hell do I do with this itch apart from chop my whole hand off?

Chop off your hand...I've just read a mumsnet thread on Mumsnet advice being crap so......

I hope the itch goes away soon or you find some way to scratch it.

I get the most horrific itches on the roof of my mouth and up inside my bum 😳. Sorry for tmi, but I can't cut my mouth or my bum off so I want sympathy.

I had a mild dose of shingles a couple of weeks back and although I feel better the rash has not completely gone. The middle of my back is still itchy and I can't quite reach it properly to scratch. I have to ask my DH, or rub myself on door frames and anything else I can find.

Hellocatshome · 01/09/2022 22:11

Hmm so no solution then? I am going to make its my lifes work to invent some sort of anti itch tablet or suppository for @Doingtheboxerbeat Although I will have to so it one handed.

Try just tapping on top of the bandage? It sounds like a form of torture!

gamerchick · 01/09/2022 22:12

Take an antihistamine and get something cold on it. I do that for healing tattoos when you cannot scratch under any circumstances.

pannikin · 01/09/2022 22:13

Have you tried taking an antihistamine?

MenaiMna · 01/09/2022 22:16

Fool your hand by changing its temperature? How about putting some ice cubes in a towel then a zip lock and laying it gently across the back of the hand for a few minutes. It's probably heat and swelling(your skin is stretching etc) from the wound that is causing the itch. It works on my arthritis when it's extreme.

Ah thank you everyone, ill put down the bread knife for now and try some frozen chips (I dont have ice cubes) instead.

Do you mean an itch that you can’t scratch?

Have you tried a dewormer?

OP don't try and stick stuff down to scratch your bloody stitches 🤣 cold is a good idea, would a pain killer help? Scratch the other hand?

MarsupiIami · 01/09/2022 22:47

I get a neuropathic itch in my foot that scratching does nothing for. It drives me mad. If you’ve got piriton take that, it won’t work on the itch necessarily, but apparently the sedative effect is helpful. I have to sort of tune it out, but it’s hard to explain how!

I havent tried to stick anything down there I was just pointing out I couldn't even if I wanted to which I really really do. Dosed up on painkillers for the actual pain but they dont seem to be stopping the itch. The frozen chips may be working or at least they are taking my mind off it
