Urgent help! Care leaver and housing

SplashparkSummer · 31/08/2022 10:38

A young woman is becoming homeless imminently. What can be done about housing? It doesn't look like private renting will be an option as need a guarantor. She is a care leaver but I'm not sure up to what age that is relevant?

Any help much appreciated.

She needs to present herself as homeless to her local council - they should house her in emergency accommodation (likely hotel/b&b) whilst they assess if they have a duty to support her.
UNLESS she is being made homeless due to being evicted from council housing in which case they will say they have no duty to house her and she will need to look to stay with family/friends/look at homeless shelter support possibly.

How old is she? Relevant to care leaver support eligibility.

If she is under 21 she will be priority need for emergency housing

If she is a care leaver she does have some additional support rights up to the age of 25, how old is she? Her best chance of getting housed is most likely through the Care Leaver route, although the eligibility is complicated. Does she have an allocated support worker at the local authority that care for her as a child?

Care leavers can get support up to 25. Does she still have a social worker?

she needs to contact the council asap and prove she is being made homeless. This can be a signed letter from who she is currently living with to give an eviction date.

Bless her how stressful, can’t imagine. Can you also contact shelter etc and see what they say? It’s no time for a young girl to be being made homeless. No time at all.

Ok, thank you. She's not being evicted from council housing.

Afaik, she does still have a social worker. Thank you so much I'll contact shelter.
