To think that "bottomless brunch" is a bloody stupid name

Loads of places near me seem to be popping up serving "bottomless brunch" i.e. a meal and as much prosecco as you want within a 90 minute or 2 hour window. All fine, apart from most are advertised as being between 12pm and 3pm, or sometimes 12.30pm until 4.

I don't think it's just me thinking that brunch is something you have between breakfast and lunchtimes.....a bigger, later breakfast that will tide you over until dinner if you will. Admittedly they probably don't want hordes of people getting pissed at 10am but what they're advertising is not brunch, it's just getting hammered at lunchtime. Which I'd be 100% up for if I wasn't irrationally annoyed that they were calling it brunch.

It's a fair point but bottomless lunch doesn't quite have the same alliteration effect to attract customers.

Valdera · 30/08/2022 19:03

Yup, it’s stupid. Also, I first went to one where the ‘brunch’ was bottomless as well as the booze. And it was for 3 hours, not 90mins. An amazing buffet, with every type of food you could want, champagne glass being topped up continuously. It was awesome. That’s how it’s supposed to be done.

Sunnyqueen · 30/08/2022 19:03

Who really gives a shit what it's called? Book the table and enjoy yourselves they are bloody great.

LimoncelloSpritz · 30/08/2022 19:11

You see this as a problem?

Imthedamnfoolwhoshothim · 30/08/2022 19:12

It's simple supply and demand.
The times had to be extended because people need them during those times.

LionessesRules · 30/08/2022 19:13

Who cares what they are called. We used to go to an epic one for special occasions. Unlimited food and booze, 12-4. No dinner required!!!! Bit far to travel these days, but have very fond memories.

Keyansier · 30/08/2022 19:13

Those times sound reasonable to me. But bottomless food and Prosecco at 9am? No thanks.

chilliesandspices · 30/08/2022 19:14

I see brunch as the meal I eat instead of breakfast. When I'm only having two meals per day.

balalake · 30/08/2022 19:42

Brunch as a word is unreasonable. We are not the 51st state.

Maybe this will end for all the wrong reasons, the cost of living crisis and energy bills.

Greenkitten · 30/08/2022 19:44

Limitless lunch. Fixed it for you!

Teddeh · 30/08/2022 19:48

I think the menus for this usually include both (what would traditionally be) breakfast and lunch dishes? Plus very self-conscious hybrids (Full English Shakshuka, anyone?) And the drinks are traditionally brunchy ones (prosecco, bllinis, mimosas, bloody marys, spritzes) even if beer, cider, and wine are also available. So "brunch" really describes the food, not the time of day.

I've also seen "bottomless supper clubs": anywhere from 4-7 PM on.

JurrasicCazza · 30/08/2022 19:50

All day piss up doesn't sound as glamorous though, does it?

BeeDavis · 30/08/2022 20:02

Fucking hell what a boring post.

TrickorTreacle · 30/08/2022 20:54

When I read the OP's title, I am reminded of the Premier Inn breakfast upgrade that you can get for £10. It's a full English breakfast and you can keep refilling your plate until you're full. Unlimited tea, coffee and juice as well. Until about 11AM. So that's a "bottomless brunch" is to me.

If it's any other time of the day like lunch or evening meal, then the term is normally "all you can eat".

I've never been to anywhere with unlimited alcohol, but I think the correct term for that is a "free bar" where you just pay a single entry amount.

ShirleyPhallus · 30/08/2022 20:56

I had a thread on this as it makes me FURIOUS that people call any period after 11.30am brunch.

a slightly compelling argument was that brunch could now refer to the style of food as well as the time of day. So things like avocado on toast served at 3pm could be brunch.

I still think it’s nonsense of course but am maybe 5% convinced

Isonthecase · 30/08/2022 21:06

I'm more annoyed that people are talking about the most amazing bottomless brunches without telling the rest of us where they are!!

Arbesque · 30/08/2022 21:09

It's like afternoon tea, which now seems to be served from midday.

Fucking hell what a boring post.

Yes your post is rather boring and pointless. Perhaps just ignore threads that don't interest you instead of forcing everyone to read your less than interesting comment.
