Why is everyone obsessed with Cornwall?

Disclaimer: I've never actually been!

But why traditionally cornwall and not say the isle of wight, or sussex, or east Anglia?

I guess I can understand flocking to the southernmost tip back in the 60s when there would be washout summers but (thanks global warming!) isn't it time to branch out a bit now?

Ssshh don't tell anyone about Norfolk! Wink

00100001 · 30/08/2022 16:19

It's beautiful.

Has some of the best beaches.

It's just a lovely place to visit.

FiveDollarMilkshake · 30/08/2022 16:19

You just need to go then you’ll understand Wink

gatehouseoffleet · 30/08/2022 16:21

Middle class FOMO

It's nice but not THAT nice. And lets face it, you have to drive through Devon to get there, so why bother going any further?

To be honest, I would probably like it if it wasn't so overcrowded but I hate crowds. I think there are two types of people in the world - one sees crowds and goes elsewhere and the other sees crowds and thinks "what am I missing, and joins the crush". I am definitely in the first category! People who go to Cornwall are in the second!

NecklessMumster · 30/08/2022 16:23

It's compactish once you get there. Lots of lovely beaches, gardens, towns. But too busy, can't park in summer. Gower is also v beautiful

Discovereads · 30/08/2022 16:23

Aidan Turner shirtless?

FacebookPhotos · 30/08/2022 16:24

It has beautiful beaches and the people are really friendly ime. But it's way too busy and expensive now - we go to Anglesey instead.

meateatingveggie · 30/08/2022 16:24

Is lovely but no more so than lots of other places.

The locals are a pretty hostile lot.

forgut · 30/08/2022 16:25

It's nice but agree very overhyped, it's so far away! I also feel Salcombe is vey overrated. Went to Wales & was blown away by the beaches.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 30/08/2022 16:27

it's lovely but Pembrokeshire is just as lovely but doesn't seem to get half the hype. Pembrokeshire might appreciate not being hyped tbf.

kitcat15 · 30/08/2022 16:27

Depends where you live....when I lived in Hampshire I went a few times....now I live in NW I never go....don't know anyone who goes....we all go to Wales, the lakes or North Yorkshire dales if we staying in UK and want countryside/ beach hols ....can't say I thought Cornwall was any nicer

ItsSnowJokes · 30/08/2022 16:27

I dont get the fascination with Cornwall either, and I get slaughtered for it as husband and his family are cornish born and bred for multiple generations. Its always really windy, it rains so much and the beaches are never that easy to get to on foot. I probably say that as we live in a place with easy to access sandy beaches and a lot of sunshine so to me why do I bother!

TallulahBetty · 30/08/2022 16:28

I find it very meh.

Also, a lot of the locals hate tourists. Despite them bringing in a lot of custom and money.

Totally agree...we stayed there in an airbnb in April....we loved it

Shhhhhh keep it quiet!!

I go to Cornwall every year and have done since I was little. Nothing to do with feeling like missing out and following thr crowds. We know where the quiet places are though and know the best days and times to visit the busier places that we love to visit (St Ives is beautiful if you get it right)

Howeverdoyouneedme · 30/08/2022 16:28

I’ve only been once, lovely but I go to Devon or the Gower instead. Looks the same pretty much.

East Anglia is a different vibe and scenery.

Soubriquet · 30/08/2022 16:29

I went there several years ago, and loved it.

So dog friendly, beautiful beaches, gorgeous walks.

MissingNashville · 30/08/2022 16:29

I think Cornwall is beautiful. We have a house there as we love it so much. There’s other nice places of course, it’s just personal preference.

Suedomin · 30/08/2022 16:30

I think Northumberland is just as beautiful or maybe even better

ItsSnowJokes · 30/08/2022 16:32

Also most people drive past similar or the same type of locations on the way down there! The traffic is hideous and there are way cheaper places to go.

I think it's a specific FOMO for the middle classes who live in SE England. Londoners in particular seem obsessed with Cornwall.

Up here, people tend to go to Northumberland, or the Lakes.

PattyMelt · 30/08/2022 16:32

We went for the first time this year stayed in Looe.
It is very nice, the beaches and fishing villages are lovely. We went to museums and the Lobster breeding place. Had a great time.
The hotel was lovely so was the food, the staff were so helpful and friendly even if they don't like tourists.
Next time we'll pick another place in UK we haven't been. Maybe Pembrokeshire, or Edinburgh.

We get on well with the locals. HTH.
