Double vision question !!!

Hey!

for as long as I’ve been alive, I’ve been able to make my eyes go double when I want to. I don’t know what I’m doing and I’m not crossing my eyes- they look the exact same as normal- but I just do something to them and it makes my vision go double. I know it’s totally normal and most people can do it but I was just interested in what’s actually happening to my eyes and how it works when I make it go double, if anyone knows? I tried to Google it but I could only find information about eyes going crossed or squinting which they aren’t doing, my eyes are still staying straight and don’t look any different but whatever I’m looking at splits clearly into 2 (the double thing is always to the right of the real thing if that makes a difference) just being nosey and wondered if anyone knew how it works!

I know about convergence insufficiency but I don’t mean that- I’m talking about when I do something to my eyes and actively make it go double. I was just curious about what’s actually happening!

It usually takes a bit of muscle power to hold your eyes so that they converge on the thing you’re focusing on. You are letting your muscles relax so your eyes are no longer focusing on the same thing and you’re seeing double. The difference isn’t enough for you to be able to see it in terms of which way your eyes are pointing

People associate cross eyes with double vision as it’s a common way of trying to do it.

You are ‘unusual’ in that you can do so without any real effort, but you’re still just adjusting focus vs what you’re looking at.

’Normally’ the subconscious makes the fine tuning in the eyes to ‘aim’ their convergence, and overlay the two views focused into one.

You have managed to ‘look’ at a point and are able to subconsciously adjust as you wish as opposed to adjusting to ‘normal’
