to ask HOW it was decided ROTHERHAM was named as Children’s Capital of Culture for 2025?

Apologies if this has already been covered although I don’t recall seeing anything on here on this topic…
Just seen a thread on Twitter that Rotherham has been named as the Children’s Capital of Culture for 2025. This is the first time we have had a children’s capital of culture and it’s been awarded to Rotherham??? Given the scandals with the child grooming and sexual exploitation, is this some kind of very sick joke?

Its not surprising you might question whether it's a sick joke.

The website is interesting, quite heavy emphasis on anti racism and dealing with their own unconscious bias but when they ordered the photographs on the "meet the team" page all the white people appear first!

I'd love to know how much public money they're getting.

GinIronic · 29/08/2022 00:22

That is truly appalling.

Proof?

Rainbowshit · 29/08/2022 00:33

WTAF?!?!

LondonWolf · 29/08/2022 00:34

Disgusted but not particularly shocked. As a nation we've turned our faces from far worse than this in the name of diversity.

FeelingGuilty151 · 29/08/2022 00:36

“In the name of diversity”

I’m a victim. Even tho the people in authority who overlooked the abuse and blamed the victims because they looked down on the girls and called them slags and slappers, were white, particularly white police officers

the race excuse doesn’t hold any weight

This isn’t a thread about racism. It is about the senseless decision to name Rotherham a children’s cultural capital with a deluded view that the new ‘branding’ will detract from its historical scandals of failure to protect Rotherham’s numerous child victims.

I actually gasped when I read this. Not good, not good at all. We are supposed to forget what we know, and to forget that we know, aren't we.

So sorry you went through this @FeelingGuilty151

Truly awful. The system failed young girls and, in allowing Rotherham to have this award, is brushing the whole horrendous matter under the carpet. So blinkered and so wrong.

yet racists are posting

orbitalcrisis · 29/08/2022 08:48

Are they just trying to distract? What have they done to right the wrongs of the past and is it worth celebrating?

Lockheart · 29/08/2022 08:48

You don't think a project to help regenerate Rotherham through arts, music, dance etc aimed at children should go ahead because of what happened? Personally I think the children of Rotherham need it more than many, but you do you.

Againstmachine · 29/08/2022 08:58

The worst thing is many on here think it is the past, it is still happening in Rotherham.

RosaGallica · 29/08/2022 09:05

Good god. Because someone in power wants to “change the city’s image” I guess, and as usual isn’t prepared to do that the hard way by actually doing some work, solving problems, and making a real difference. Why bother working to solve hard problems when a marketing campaign does the job for you, especially when it’s only (sarcasm alert) worthless poor girls affected. That’s the way Britain works.

Exactly. I’m so sorry for what you went through. Flowers I hope your attackers are in jail.

I'd love to know how much public money they're getting.

About £1.9 million from the below. No apologies for daily mail link, at least they sometimes put forward the riff-raff’s point of view. This is Britain, where image and prejudice matter more than lives.

Wonnle · 29/08/2022 09:27

So who has decided that this was going to happen ?
Sounds like this 64 million lot have just done it themselves and gave it a fancy name .

RosaGallica · 29/08/2022 09:30

Try clicking the Daily Mail link. Michael Gove okayed it.

RaRaRaspoutine · 29/08/2022 09:33

Oh this is a hideous, hideous decision.

I’m all for arts, music, culture, dance etc benefitting children, but giving that accolade to Rotherham as the first ever town to have to this award?? That’s tarnishing the event before it’s even taken place!
I personally feel that more needs to be done to right the wrongs of what’s happened in Rotherham and surrounding areas and ensure it isn’t still happening. It makes a mockery of the award quite frankly.
