Recently got in touch with an old friend and we were catching up and I said I’d been doing exams for my new job.

They asked what I did and then said -

WOW … I didn’t know you needed qualifications to do that job.

Comes down to tone and I guess your job ? I would be surprised some jobs need exams and would mean it from the pov that things have got a bit silly for some professions, that formerly wouldn't have required then, but I would try to say it tactfully, if not at all.

I wouldn’t call it rude rather clumsy. She’s probably meant that your level of education is enough without any additional exams.
