Dog barking every night

Our neighbour a few doors down moved in a few years ago. Couple with teenage kids. Don’t know them very well but seem nice enough. But. They have a dog that barks and howls in their back garden every evening/night for 20-45 minutes non-stop. Usually starts between around 2215 and 2230 (but can be later and started at 2330 a few nights ago and it has started after midnight occasionally in the past). I hear it barking during the day which I really couldn’t care less about.

Our bedroom and our youngest DC’s bedroom have windows onto the back garden. The barking wasn’t so bad in winter as we have the windows closed. But it’s been so hot this summer that it’s now driving me crazy. It also wakes DC as it goes on for so long. I could cope with an occasional bark at night but it just goes on for so long.

I’m very much a live and let live kind of neighbour, but the timing and length of the barking is pretty antisocial?

So before I go over and complain (I’ve never complained to a neighbour before so am feeling a bit nervous about doing it), AIBU?

Yep, anti-social. They need to be taking the dog out for a last walk instead of putting it in the garden.

I am a dog owner.
YADNBU.

What’s going on here I wonder? Just binned out in the garden and left to it?

PersonaNonGarter · 26/08/2022 23:20

I am live-n-let-live too but this is definitely in anti-social hours (9pm - 7am IMHO). Really unreasonable.

Record it for a couple of nights- when it starts, when it finishes etc, and write to them voicing your concern giving those as an example.

Do you know if other neighbours are fed up?

Thanks. I’ve been keeping notes for the past few weeks in case I need to have proof.

The semi attached to them has young children too, and I’m amazed no-one else has complained. Or maybe they have and the owners just don’t care 🤷🏼‍♀️

Any other thoughts?

Of course it's inappropriate but you need to go and speak to them about it first.

StoneofDestiny · 27/08/2022 07:28

Just tell them - the dogs' relentless barking is stopping your family from sleeping!

Thanks all.

I’ve been round. Surreal experience. At first she seemed a bit vague about whether she had a dog despite standing in the doorway with a dog. When I asked directly, do you have a dog that is in your garden late at night, she agreed she did but “wasn’t sure” if it was her dog barking as she keeps her windows closed (I can easily hear the dog even with the window closed). I explained it has been going on for years and it’s disturbing us and our children late at night. It then couldn’t be her dog as she’s only lived here 3 years 🤦🏼‍♀️. I did get a bit annoyed at this point as she was being ridiculous and defensive. I would have been mortified and apologetic in the same situation. It ended with her closing the door on my and me telling her through a partly closed door that I would be reporting it to the council as nuisance. I don’t think we’re friends 😂
