To think school should have told me?

On the way home from school today DS5 told me that another child in his class hit him in the back of the head, on purpose. Apparently DS bumped into the smart board by mistake and made something that was paused start playing so this other child hit him "really hard", according to DS. This child has also threatened to hit DS in the past and is generally quite mean and rough with DS, even when asked to stop.

He did tell his teacher (not his normal one) at the time and she told the child off and informed the headteacher but AIBU to be annoyed that I had to hear from my five year old that he was essentially assaulted by a classmate and not his teacher? Surely when we are talking about 5/6 year olds an adult should relay this information?

We’d get a kicking from our head if we failed to inform a parent about a head injury so YANBU. (I’m a TA)

This happened to my DD but she was older. Slapped round the face by a ruler by a lad. She told teacher and was told 'oh he probably fancies you, that's what he does'. She didn't tell me till following day and I'd not heard from school. I phoned the head of year and said I wasn't happy about a) he was allowed to do it b) the teacher didn't feel it was an issue (erm physical assault not an issue??!!) C) failed to escalate it. And she laughed at me. Needless to say I ended up going to head teacher/governors.

Get onto school ASAP.

You should be informed of a head injury yes

The child has a bit of a record for being violent in class/being mean to others as well as DS. Last year he threatened to give DS "black eyes" for no reason.

While I'm obviously angry that this child has hit my DS, I know they will be (should be) taking steps but I'm really annoyed that no one has been in touch to tell me. I'll be making a call to the school in the morning.
