Am I The weird One?

Tilda77 · 24/08/2022 19:04

Just out of curiosity I thought I would ask the advice of mumsnetters to see if I'm the weird one.
My DH and his parents who are currently staying with us have an obsession with germs.
I always shower in the morning and the evening too most days. They shower just in the evenings. I change my clothes daily. They all have 2 sets of clothes in use at any one time. They have clothes they wear indoors and when it's time to go out they change. As soon as they are home they change back into the home clothes. They won't even sit on the sofa in clothes they have been outside in. They look at me when I sit on the sofa in my outside clothes as though I have 2 heads! These clothes I'm wearing are not obviously dirty and neither are their's when they get home. Most of the time i will change into something more comfortable after I've been home a while.Even if they are home for half an hour before they're going out again they still change the clothes. When my mum visits as soon as she leaves MIL does the vacuuming and mops the whole of the downstairs. I find it insulting and have said this to DH. He says it's because his mum doesn't like that my mum wears slippers. The slippers have never been worn outside. There have been so many incidents of this imo odd behaviour in the 3 months they have been staying with us. I'm interested to know everyone's views.
So my question is Am I normal or am I the weird one?
YABU -You are the weird one and clothes should be changed immediately as soon as you are home.
YANBU- They're just clothes. They're not obviously dirty and they are the weird ones

You're normal, they're weird.

JustSortYoursefOut · 24/08/2022 19:06

Your MIL is insane.

Sunnyqueen · 24/08/2022 19:17

Very weird. And yeah vacuuming and mopping after your mum's left v insulting, I would be letting her know straight on that one how rude and weird that is.

abblie · 24/08/2022 19:17

My aunt and uncle are like this lovely people thinks it's more like ocd rather than being weird

Crunchingleaf · 24/08/2022 19:22

Certain jobs you would charge your clothes as soon as you get home. Inside clothes and outside clothes….very odd. Are you allowed open the windows OP and let the outside air in 🤔
Cleaning after your DM leaves is super insulting and not okay.

Tilda77 · 24/08/2022 19:24

Thank you for your replies! Last week when I was taking my mum home we had to pop back to mine as she'd forgotten something. She went in to get it and witnessed MIL vacuuming. We'd only been gone less than 10 minutes. I haven't told my mum the real reason MIL vacuums. I'm not that brave 😂

They are obsessive. Need to go to some of the countries I have been to. Rats running round the floor!

I agree! If I had been doing a mucky job and was dirty I'd definitely change. The clothes have just been used to go to the supermarket in and things like that.
They open the windows all day long and sometimes the patio doors. It just makes the house hotter and the flies come in for a house party😂Makes no sense to me.

They sound weird but two showers a day is also over kill, especially now

Angelinflipflops · 24/08/2022 19:31

I leave doors and windows open all day, I guess it depends where you live

I see your point but my showers are in, wash and done. 5 minutes each and a little longer for a hair wash day. Their showers the water is running for almost half an hour. I kid you not! I don't know what they have to wash that I don't 😂 They all have short hair too!

I guess if you're working (work clothes, uniform, working outdoors, manual labour etc) and you come home from work it's usual to change into more comfortable clothes, wash uniforms etc but I don't understand going out shopping, in jeans for example, and then changing clothes when I got home!
We don't wear outdoor shoes indoors. What's the slipper issue?! Are socks cleaner???

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 15/12/2022 08:14

They're weird. Was it a covid thing or have they always been like that?

And what is their issue with slippers? What do they wear on their feet? How do they mop and vacuum in your house so often?

Tilda77 · 15/12/2022 12:43

@DrinkFeckArseBrick No not a covid thing. They've been like it in all the years I've known them.
They walk around in socks or bare feet in the house. They stayed with us for 4 months. They live in a different country and are retired so it was a super long holiday. I never asked her to vacuum or mop she just wanted to do it. She would have scrubbed the whole house given half a chance. It really isn't that bad though😅

Sounds like the MIL has a pathology and has passed it onto your DH. He should seek therapy for that.
