... to think that intervention is coming?

Naive maybe?

RE gas/electricity bills.

Things cannot go on as they are - surely? It will get to the stage where millions of people just simply will not be able to afford their gas/electricity bills. SURELY the government has got to do SOMETHING???? I'm seeing some or the figures being quoted on here as to what others have been offered and it's shocking and surely cannot go on???

Aibu to think that intervention is coming? Or do I need to accept that nobody is coming to save us?

Don't hold your breath.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 23/08/2022 18:24

The government? Do something?

The Tory Government?

No.

They won’t do anything.

bloodywhitecat · 23/08/2022 18:25

They won't do anything because they don't give a flying fuck about those who can't afford to heat their homes or eat.

Lightning020 · 23/08/2022 18:26

I think something very weird is going on with all these fixed deal offers by various utility companies.... surely they must know nobody is going to take them up if they are as high as they suggest. Are they all colluding together to prompt the government into taking action? Very odd.

Andromachehadabadday · 23/08/2022 18:27

I think there will be.

The new PM will ‘save the day’ and then call a General Election

LizzieSiddal · 23/08/2022 18:27

It’s like Covid all over again, they didn’t have a clue what they were doing and are so out of touch they think everything is hunky dory.

echobunnies · 23/08/2022 18:28

I feel the same as you, OP. I just can’t believe it can carry on like this. Maybe I’m naive too!

It all seems so crazy that I start coming up with theories, like maybe the Tories are trying to force people back into the office by making it unaffordable to stay at home too long 🤷‍♀️

Sunnyqueen · 23/08/2022 18:28

As I just posted on another thread I think the only possible way is for the ordinary people who work for the fuel company's all need to strike. They can't run a company that size on just CEOs.

TarasHarp55 · 23/08/2022 18:30

I think it's what they want. It remains to be seen as to why. But I've never known a time when people feel such despair and hopelessness. Only the rich will be unworried.

I think this. They will try to be the hero and hope all is forgiven and they will be voted in again.

Just have to hope people remember the last few years, not just the last few months before an election

I think the main thing we are being prepped for is winter blackouts. Lots of drip feeding in the press

I do think there is a possibility of a new hero pm doing something for votes too.

Overthebow · 23/08/2022 18:53

I’m thinking they will do something. Too many people won’t be able to afford this, it’s not just the bottom 20%. We’ve been offered a £500 fix, we earn well above the average household income but with all other costs rising we are worried. There’s more pressure from different groups every day, I really think come September there will be more help coming.

Lightning020 · 23/08/2022 18:57

The news just came on but Rishi just referred to lowering VAT on fuel. Nothing else.

sicklycolleague · 23/08/2022 18:58

I think (hope) they're just keeping cards close to their chest during the leadership race so as not to be overly scrutinised - but that there must be some sort of plan for whenever they get in

DogsAndGin · 23/08/2022 18:59

What government?

Booklover3 · 23/08/2022 19:04

@Andromachehadabadday totally agree

saltyairandsandyskin · 23/08/2022 19:05

@JudithHarper who's being paid to stay at home and do nothing? The more I'm
At home (working) the more energy I'm using...... your argument doesn't stick.

Also - nice early "blame immigrants" statement there. Because it's immigrants pushing the prices up, obviously!!!

Jesus some people are 🍖

Yup, this is what I think too.

LetsGoNorth · 23/08/2022 19:13

Why does the government HAVE to do SOMETHING? The price is not set by the government

This. I think anyone thinking the new PM will 'save the day' is being incredibly naiive. What exactly do you think they're going to do? Give every UK household £3k in cash every year until energy prices drop? Because that's what it would take. Pfft.

I think there's every change of a further token gesture - Maybe the £400 will be increased to £600 off bills, spread over 6 months.

But that won't save the day. It won't even touch the sides and lots of people will still be racking up thousands in energy debt. I think the liklihood of any more than this is slim at best.
