Is this weird?
My DD has said she's seeing a 17 year old from work and I'm not sure how I feel about it! AIBU to think this is a bit odd?

Sure she did. Is it another girl or boy?

ItsNearlyMe · 21/08/2022 19:04

It's a boy. This isn't a troll post and Mumsnet can confirm I've been around a while

Yes, he might be over the age of consent but he is still a child and a minor.

I would have a discussion with her in terms of whether she thinks it's appropriate to date a child, whether she is prepared to handle the judgement that will go with it and has she any understanding of the power imbalance.

I wouldn't be happy and doubt his parents will ne either.

When I was 16 my bf was 21...would it be more palatable if the ages were the other way round?

x2boys · 21/08/2022 19:37

That's quite an age gap at that age ,my son is nearly 16 so only a year younger I would be very concerned if he was seeing someone of 22 in a years time

Nope this also gives me the creeps. Why was a 21 year old interested in someone doing GCSEs?

Echo PP op and speak to your daughter about this. My 22 year old self and 17 year old self were so different, I can’t imagine what on earth they have in common

ItsNearlyMe · 21/08/2022 19:47

Thank you for your responses everyone. I will have a chat

If you said 20 & 25 it sounds better, still the same age gap but the maturity is there.

17 & 22 to me just seems weird. He's fresh out of school.

Friarclose · 21/08/2022 19:50

I dated an 18 year old at 22. Ended up marrying him and having a child with him! Divorced now. We were together for 8 years. Is he just 17 or nearly 18?

waltzingparrot · 21/08/2022 19:53

Is she very young for her age? I know a 21yr old girl who seems so much younger.

DdraigGoch · 21/08/2022 20:04

Well they both work in the same place so that breaks the ice.

Having seen enough threads on here where a 32 year old male (often a man child who can't hold down a steady job) and a 17 year old female have somehow ended up in a relationship (yuck), I can't get worked up about a much smaller age gap. Especially given that the OP's daughter is the older one in this scenario, so isn't the naive vulnerable one. It's weird but not sinister, just let it run its course.

AmbushedByCake1 · 21/08/2022 20:06

If this was a 17 year old girl seeing a 22 year old man no one on this site would bat an eyelid.

EllieRosesMammy · 21/08/2022 20:08

It's one of those risky grey areas isn't it, he's over the age of consent but she's legally an adult. So yeah I'd find it a bit weird.

ArcticSkewer · 21/08/2022 20:13

Why would she? Is she very young for her age? Or, apologies, a bit controlling? I wouldn't be happy about this, nor as the parent of the 17 year old. Hope the chat goes well

Of course they would.

Jalepenojello · 21/08/2022 20:15

Seems weird to me.

Howabsolutelyfanfuckingtastic · 21/08/2022 20:24

I wouldn't be happy about it, although i realise you can't tell an adult what to do and at 22 she will make her own mind up.
This is a tricky situation.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 21/08/2022 20:48

My boyfriend of 2 1/2 years was 24 and I was 18 when we met. When I met DH I was 21 and he was 18. I think I still would've gone out with him at 17 because he is who he is and he was very mature anyway.

Mammyloveswine · 22/08/2022 10:03

I had a fling with an 18 year old when I was 23... was good fun! We met in town and he did tell me he was 20 at first!

He lived with mates in a house-share and had a full-time job.

Is this guy almost 18? And by "seeing" are they just hanging out?

Def have a chat about emotional maturity differences and what she is expecting out of this-he csnt even legally drink so even just going out for dinner and drinks on a date is ruled out!
