D of E - how long for sign off once completed?

Reposting as posted in Extra Curricular but don't get much traffic there.

DD did their expedition at the end of April, the group did their presentation about it at the end of June. By the time they did the presentation, she had finished and submitted Physical, Skill and Volunteering sections and they were already marked off as Completed by her Assessor on the website. So doing the Expedition presentation and submitting that was the very last piece. We assumed it would get approved by the Assessor fairly quickly as they said on the day that they were happy with it but nothing happened. After 3 weeks, DD sent a message asking if there was anything else for her to do in order for it to be approved, no answer. Sent again 2 weeks later and this time the Assessor approved it and said that they would send it in. 3 weeks on and it is still just showing on the edofe as all the sections completed.

DD really wants to start Silver as her Physical and Volunteering choices have restarted now for the 22/23 season and she can't count the sessions that she's doing now. If it takes much longer, she'll have trouble doing the 9 month one as the remaining season won't be 9 months (assuming she can't backdate what she's doing now to include it for her Silver, she's assuming sessions will only count from when she's registered for Silver?).

Is this a normal timescale? It's new to her and she doesn't know if they're being a bit slack or if this is how it is or if there are some other D of E rules that we're not aware of.

YABU - it's normal for the Assessors to take 2+ months to sign it off after you've submitted everything so suck it up and wait.

YANBU - it's a bit slack of them , keep chasing.

How old is she? She can be registered for Silver before Bronze is signed off, as long as she’s already in Y10. If she’s going into Y10, she’ll be able to register from 1st September. If her Bronze isn’t fully signed off, the Sections lengths will show as if she hadn’t done Bronze, but as soon as it is signed off, these will update to the timescales for a Silver continuer.

failing that, her registration into Silver can be backdated by her leader. This is SUPER easy for them to do in eDofE.

She should start her Silver sections as soon as she feels happy to, keep some evidence, and all will be well down the line!

(I’m the DofE manager at my school, this is all current advice and from personal experience!)

Thank you, that information is really helpful. She goes into Yr 10 in Sept. So maybe they're not bothering to sign off til Sept 1st then, though if so I wish they'd just communicate that. I'm always conscious they're volunteers so you feel bad if you chase for things but detailed info isn't on the website (not that we could find anyway) so it's hard to find out. This helps a lot, thank you.

My DD's D of E bronze award came 12 months after everything had been signed off. Bloody ridiculous; a whole year!. She didn't want to do silver/gold etc anyway but after waiting 12 months for a certificate, its enough to put anyone off!

This was done via a company that the school outsourced the scheme to. Previous years had been directly through the school with no delays in getting awards.

No worries - they’ll be waiting for the individual assessors to submit their reports, plus they might be sitting there waiting while summer holidays are ongoing - I know I haven’t logged in for a few weeks, when I’m usually on it a few times a week. I’ve occasionally had to chase my expedition assessors a few times to submit their reports - they take longer than you might expect, as they need to really summarise each individual’s experience - and that’s when I’m seeing them every day at work!

if she’s doing it through school, you’ll be unlikely to get anywhere by chasing until they go back, so tell her to sit tight, keep a log of anything she does from 1st Sept onwards, and it’ll all work out!

Oh! Also, once it’s come from the assessor, as she’s done all the other stuff, it’ll have to be sent on to be verified. That’s usually someone in an admin role, or a governor or something, so that’s another step that could take some time. Don’t stress - it’ll be in the works, I’m sure!

Thank you, that really helps. I've no idea who is signing off above the Assessor. So if edofe now shows all 4 sections as completed, does that mean it's waiting to be verified? Is it automatically submitted for verification or does the Assessor have to do that manually? Does it show up on edofe once it's been verified?

She's had a lot of fun doing it and I appreciate the time the leaders have put into running it but the lack of communication in the 2 months since completing the Expedition presentation is a bit frustrating for them.

It’s automatically submitted to the verifier, but they may only check edofe when prompted by the leader, so again it might be a Sept job when everyone is back in school!

We (teachers) always think that july will be our time to get back on top of admin, prep etc, but it never works out that way, so please do be patient - it’ll be on a to-do list, but we volunteer for this stuff on top of our normal teaching responsibilities so sometimes it gets shifted while other things are urgent. I don’t get time or money for doing it at my school, and it takes a LOT of time to keep on top of it all!
