To wonder how the film 'Nope' has such good reviews? (spoilers)

It was absolutely shit. Wtf was with the monkey side plot? And why did the thing turn into a giant flappy jellyfish! ? Why did the camera guy offer himself up to die when they had footage?
Why did the thing skid and fall just because of the flags (even if it knew not to eat them I doubt it would have been scared)

It was bloody awful. Worst film I've seen in ages. I genuinely hated it and feel even more pissed off as I went to Vue Manchester and its gone from 4.99 last week to a tenner!!

Sorry just have to rant. I didn't get it at all.

I loved it, best thing I’ve seen at the cinema for years.

I read it as allegory/metaphor. It’s about mass culture; the alien represents an audience hungry for endless ‘content’ that just keeps consuming.

The director was ‘eaten’ by his own vanity. His quest for the perfect shot became too much about his own ego.

LydiaDeets · 21/08/2022 10:21

My husband hated it too. His words were 'what the fuck was that about?'

I love a good psychological horror, hate gore.

No idea what I expected but I didn't find it clever or see the underwritten parallels with anything (and for context I absolutely live black mirror type things/Look up)

I just thought it was the worst thing I've seen in years 😴

Get Out was so good but I didn't get Us and can't decide if Nope is better or worse than that. Its like he keeps missing out some really important back story that makes them make sense.

I loved it! Im a big fan of his films as they always hit the spot for me

LadyKenya · 21/08/2022 10:57

I thought the film was ok. I found myself quite engrossed in it, at certain points. I am a fan of Daniel Kaluuya. He was good.

EmmaH2022 · 21/08/2022 11:00

Thanks OP
I was going to see it to escape my hot flat but didn't

I was annoyed I couldn't find out more and didn't like the trailer, so ended up not going.

I absolutely loved Nope. Excellent acting, batshit crazy story, what's not to like?

Yeah me too. Loved him ever since he was Posh Kenneth in Skins!

I also thought the guy who played Angel was terrific. Real scene-stealer. Never seen him in anything before, but he’s really talented.

Well, the world would be very boring if we all liked and disliked the same things! Brew

I like Black Mirror too. Don’t Look Up I wasn’t fussed about.

I thought it was weird and not as good as Us or Get out.

The way I interpreted it is about respecting animals / the world. The main character respects the horses and he treated the alien in the same way (not making eye contact) which is why he survived.

in contract, the guy who was in the monkey show saw first hand what goes wrong when you don’t respect animals, but he still wanted to exploit the alien for money.

I also thought at the end it turn into a giant preying mantis shape, which was ironic given that was the bug that stopped the cameras capturing the footage.

overall, it was weird, I didn’t love it, but that’s my
take on it

I really enjoyed it. I loved Get Out but I think I actually liked Nope better. The alien and attempts to capture it via surveillance are partly an allegory for US law enforcement and police brutality experienced by people of colour but like other Jordan Peele's other films there are layers and it's also commentary on the exploitative nature of Hollywood and the entertainment industry, it literally chews people up and spits them out.

Wtf was with the monkey side plot?

I loved the Gordy side plot. Probably my favourite thing about the film. What happened with the monkey and Steven Yeun's character is again commenting on the exploitative nature of Hollywood and in particular the impact on child stars. Yeun's character is clearly traumatised by what happened with Gordy but spends his life trying to monetise that trauma and use it to continue to chase fame, because he's been taught that's normal. Both he and Emerald think they can not only tame the alien but use it to chase fame and wealth, which Holst warns Emerald against as he's already been chewed up and spat out by the Hollywood machine and is completely disillusioned with it all.

Why did the camera guy offer himself up to die when they had footage?

There's a suggestion he was dying anyway, we see him coughing and taking pills. When he tells Angel "they don't deserve the impossible" its not clear if he's talking about the public, Hollywood or anyone who stands to profit from it but it's clear from his actions he wants to get the impossible shot for himself because he can, because its his art, not to monetise it or for fame or glory.

Same here. I hope he gets a lot more work off the back of this film, he was great.

And with Gordy as well he thought he had bonded/tamed a wild animal or dangerous creature in that moment so thought could do the same with the alieny thing and like you say thought could make money by doing do except went a bit wrong.

It was the worst film I've seen for a long time. The acting was particularly awful .
I walked out half way through. What a load of rubbish !

Glad I'm not the only one. Thought I was going mad.

The hype seems very 'emperors new clothes' to me

Thank you for this thread- you saved me the money I would have wasted if I'd said yes when my teenager asked me to go with her to see it this afternoon ! (I had seen the trailer last time I was at the cinema and didn't fancy it anyway to be fair.)

My DH loved it, I thought it was ok, my adult DS hated it.

Just shows we all like different things!
