Earrings for 10th birthday

AIBU to let my dd have earrings for her 10th birthday? About half the girls in her class have earring, my eldest dd got them when she was 14 (she wasn't interested before).

I just feel she is still quite young and her ears so small 😢she will be so disappointed if I say wait another year at least.

So straight up AIBU or AI not BU for letting her have earrings as a 10th birthday present?

I was 6 when I had mine pierced and I was one of the last in my class!

Tesoroxx · 19/08/2022 18:37

My 9 year old will be 10 in a few weeks got them done at the start of summer holidays so they're healed for going back to school she's been asking years and is over the moon

Saucery · 19/08/2022 18:38

When is her birthday? Some schools will ask them to remove earrings and advise piercings are done at the start of the summer holidays. Her school may be fine with covering them with plasters for PE though.

mamatoTails · 19/08/2022 18:39

Well it's up to you at the end of the day.

My eldest was 6 when she had hers done, and her sister 5.

Eldest had her 2nd set done for her 10th birthday.

My little girls are 5 and don't want them done yet.

Hotandbothereds · 19/08/2022 18:44

I had mine done when I was about 7, 10 is fine imo.

Go to a decent piercing place, not Claire’s with a gun, theyre less likely to get infected if you have them pierced professionally.

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 19/08/2022 19:06

End of year 6 in the summer holidays is ideal as lots of primary school do not allow earrings whereas secondary school are fine with a small stud. I think 10+ is fine.

LittleBearPad · 19/08/2022 19:10

I wouldn’t do it at 10

Favouritefruits · 19/08/2022 19:14

I wasn’t allowed my ears pierced until I was 15 I was so annoyed at my parents for it, I hate piercings on baby’s and young children but I think 10 is a good age, she’s going to be in high school next year so let her feel a little grown up. She can buy cute little studs just be firm before hand and tell her no hoops or dangling earrings as they are too grown up and dangerous.

Twizbe · 19/08/2022 19:15

I think 10 is ok. I've said to my daughter she has to be 11 but that's very close.

I used to do ear piercing and I based that on 11 as a slowing down of growth. Having them done too young can lead to uneven earrings as the ears grow.

Lindy2 · 19/08/2022 19:16

DD had hers done at 10, at the end of year 5. I was planning on leaving it until the end of year 6 but apparently I made some promise during lockdown about her being able to get them done once we made it through all the Covid stuff.

In hindsight though the end of year 5 has made good sense. They're well established and she's mastered putting them in and out with no problems at all ready for Secondary school.

FelicityFlops · 19/08/2022 19:17

This post is absolutely why Mumsnet is NOT middle class.

Idbemonica1 · 19/08/2022 19:18

Mine had them done when they were old enough to do the cleaning of them themsflves with minimal supervision. I think 10 is fine OP

BattenburgDonkey · 19/08/2022 19:20

I think 10 is a reasonable age, she will be totally confident with them by the time she gets to high school and needs to take them out for PE. Although my DD is much younger so I’ve not had to make this decision myself yet.

BattenburgDonkey · 19/08/2022 19:20

However I would go to a reputable piercer that uses a needle and not a gun like Claire’s accessories.

Heartofglass12345 · 19/08/2022 19:21

I would let her if she wants them done, my sons school allow studs and they don't have to take them out or cover them up for PE. I can't imagine many accidents happening from stud earrings. I do like piercings though and had my ears pierced a few times when I was around 12/13, before you needed permission from parents haha

mountainsunsets · 19/08/2022 19:21

I think 10 is fine but I'd wait until the summer holidays so they have a chance to heal.

Heartofglass12345 · 19/08/2022 19:21

Oh and I agree about a reputable piercing place that uses needles, ask for recommendations

My daughter was 8 when she had hers pierced at a piercing studio.

DDivaStar · 27/02/2023 17:36

My daughters 9 and will be having her ears pierced at the beginning of the Easter holidays. Its for her 20th birthday in June. I know alot of people do them so they heal over the summer but its also not recommended to swim until they are healed and we swim alot over summer !

DDivaStar · 27/02/2023 17:37

Haha 10th not 20th !

Soulstirring · 27/02/2023 17:40

I’d let her have them at 10. Just make sure (sorry, unsolicited advice) you buy hypoallergenic or pure gold earrings as the nickel in the ones they use in piercing shops can react and cause all sorts of avoidable problems.

SallyWD · 27/02/2023 17:58

I think 10 is OK. I had mine done at 9 and so did my daughter. We never had any problems.

soleilblue · 27/02/2023 17:59

Just before the summer holidays before they go to secondary
