Help, iPhone stolen in France, tips on cheap replacement to cover rest of holiday??

I hope I am not being unreasonable to post for help. Mumsnet previously provided me a solution to a tricky problem. I want to tap into your knowledge to help me again.

student DD had her iPhone stolen in Nice, France last night.
She has marked it as lost on Find my Phone.
She is holding out erasing everything until she can look again close by the address that is showing up as location. She has checked shops on this street to see if it was handed in, but no luck so far.
I am certain it is stolen as other items also missing from her bag, incl all the money in her purse.

She will be there for another 2 weeks. I don’t want her to be without a phone, especially as she is out at night, and needs google maps to find her way around the city.

She is in bits as it was not backed up, she will lose lots of photos, videos, study notes.

Is there anyone on here who can advise of a cheapish smart phone and phone package that would do her for next 2 weeks? And where she should go to organise it?

Wasn't the phone insured?

I have an oppo phone, cheap and cheerful, does everything I need it to but no idea where you would go in France to buy a phone. They must have an equivalent of Argos, comet or Currys?

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 19/08/2022 20:05

No, phone not insured. Definitely something to consider for future.

Oppo has a few phones at the price point I was thinking of. Will need to be cheap and cheerful for the foreseeable future.

My friend had her phone snatched right out of her hand whilst on a call in Paris.

I like Motorolas. Good value and an amazing battery life.
She'll need a replacement SIM sent out etc.

babyjellyfish · 19/08/2022 20:13

She should head for her nearest Darty, they will have a large selection of phones. Then she can get a PAYG sim to tide her over.

Another alternative would be a cash converters, or a troc. Leclerc, carrefour etc also have phones. Also amazon.fr can deliver in 24hrs.

XelaM · 19/08/2022 20:20

Amazon - Samsungs are fairly cheap and then a sim from a newsagent

Thank you everyone, for all the advice. I really appreciate you taking the time to help.

I will advise her to shop around, from the list of outlets mentioned by you all.
And to organise a PAYG sim. And to look for a low end phone, because that is all she can afford…
